Possible to display album art under folder view in N-Stream?

Posted by: engjoo on 01 May 2015

Hi there, I am using a Synology NAS (DSM 5.1) and would like to know if anyone on Synology or otherwise is able to get album art to be display at the folder level ?

Is this a limitation of the upnp server or N-Stream ? I was able to view the album art at the track level but not folder level.

I find this approach easier from a navigation perspective. The problem I have is my metadata are not well sorted so if I browse by artist, album etc, I get loads of rubbish. :-)

Thanks for the ideals. It does looks like organising my metadata would be my number one priority!

Yes -- get your metadata sorted out!  What you're trying to do with folder views is exactly what sorted metadata will allow you to do   While it may seem tedious, sometimes it's actually "fun" to go through all of your music.  You could re-discover albums you've not thought about in a long time, or maybe cull things you know you'll never listen to.

I have found that somewhat 'standardizing' how I do metadata makes it a lot easier to find what I'm looking for.  At the very least, you'll be able to browse by Artist and find it all - with art!

Apologies if this is already solved or not relevant but on Synology DSM 5.1 I got album artwork to display using the settings on DSM Media Server.

Under Browser Settings make sure the tick box to 'Set images with the below filename....' Is ticked.

Then if your album folders include folder.jpg they will be displayed on the Naim app.

"Then if your album folders include folder.jpg they will be displayed on the Naim app."

This unfortunately does not work in folder view (when browsing the directory structure). You see the artwork for the songs inside the folder, but not as folder icon when listing the parent (artist) folder of this album folder.

Exactly, with Synology Folder View,  you get what it says on the label, a folder.  Also you don't need a folder (.jpg) in the album, it picks up metadata embedded art & can also be directed to pick up any art of your personal choice from www.   And before anyone says not in .wav - oh yes it does

Yes I did just that but it will not show if I browse by folders. It will show if I browse by artist or album.

In Folder View a folder is a folder icon thing that you get when you select browse by folder.

Folder in this instance is a folder as per MS Windows  (not sure what they're called in Mac)  that you file doc, spread sheets, pictures etc in.

The small picture file you get with an album is also called folder but its a .jpg

- its a stupid name to call this specific item, its the album art cover .jpg,  so why not call it art or cover,  or .jgp even.

Yes but Synology DS Audio App will allow you to see the album art even in folder view.

OK so what,  it does what it does with DSM Media Server &  the Naim app & its viewing the files (called folders) exactly as its seen in both Synology File Station & on your PC Windows Explorer or Mac Finder

No it is not the same. A folder.jpg or cover.jpg inside a folder is attached to the music files inside the folder. So when listing the content of an album folder you see the tracks with the album art, even in folder view.

That the cover can also be attached to the album folder shows minimserver and other servers. This functionality can not be compared 1:1 to a file manager view to directories as the upnp server can modify the content.

I think we have a misunderstanding going on,  a folder contains the album tracks & the .jpg,  but the .jpg is not a required item.  The art that you see in the app does not have to be taken from the .jpg, it's embedded in the metadata, & yes it can be taken from the .jpg or from www.

In my system I have albums without the .jpg,  the app shows the art perfectly OK,  in all views except in "Folder View".
