Ns01. DNS. Not set
Posted by: steven2907 on 09 May 2015
Hi All, And good morning. Well I took the plunge and bought a 2nd hand ns01, I've followed all instructions and it all seems to be working fine apart from System status. DNS !!! Not set !!! Does this need to be set to enable me to use the nserv app as my iPad and iPhone are showing no servers found!
If I place a disc in the draw it does copy the disc with disc data showing ( not all discs though ) so I can only assume that it's connecting to my wired internet to get the information.
I would also like to update its firmware!!
the server IP address seems to be showing 10.0.1.3. And subnet mask. 255.255.255.0
Is this a return to naim or can I do it via any other means?
Thanks
The DNS is important, it needs this use the internet, so although you can see it on the LAN, it won't see the WAN and therefore won't get internet radio etc.
Your IP sounds like you use an airport, which leads me to assume you have an apple. You need a pc to set the IP, if perchance you have VMware or similar on your mac this will work.
Thanks for the quick replies
My NS01 is running overall version 1.4b sp5....Ive downloaded all files and burnt them to CD ready for installation one at a time....the 1st downloadable update is 1.5...I've inserted the disc. the monitor I have displays in a small box on the top right starting upgrade....10 seconds or so later it ejects the disc. I remove but leave the disc tray open.....after about 15 mins the display on my monitor returns to normal. I turn the ns01 of by the remote, then via the rear switch I turn it off and then on...it boots up and is still displaying the same screen and firmware as before.....
I am using a windows 7 laptop
I have the nserv app installed on my ipad and iphone
I have the nserv desktop client installed on my laptop and neither can see the NS01
Am Idoing everything correct....
Ive checked my BT Hub and that doesnt see the NS01 either
HELP
Re done all my discs in iOS format but still no joy. 1st disc is ejected after no more the 5 seconds then the Ns01 shows system upgrade for around 20 mins then returns to home screen, I turn of via remote then off on via rear button. No change still showing original firmware.
Sounds to me like you have network issues you need to sort out before you try to update firmware. I'd get the device working on your network before you update it. If you haven't already found it, this thread is a good place to start:

If you're still getting nowhere, pour yourself a glass of wine and write an email to Naim tech support. There's not much point in tearing your hair out for hours over something they can probably diagnose in minutes.
good luck...
What is your router ip address.
my feeling is your NS01 has been set to a static address by the previous owner. And this address is not in the range of your network.
You can reset the server to DHCP by restarting it with no network cable connected. When it has completely booted, power it off from the front panel button. Plug the Ethernet cable in and start it... It should be ok now.
Thanks
I seem to remember searching for the set ip tool a while back, and struggling to find it. I did track it down on another product's page, can't remember which one but it's probably still there somewhere.

It is an old programme that dates back to when Naim first released their servers. When there is no substitute (as Steven is finding) I have no idea why Naim have stopped making it available. Makes no sense.
The whole 'set ip tool' thing has always been a mystery to me. There obviously must be a valid technical reason for it, it's just that I don't know what that could be, and I'm curious. I posted the question on a couple of other threads, but nobody offered an explanation.
The DHCP server (ISP router for most of us) is in control of IP addresses, and I used mine to fix an address for my Unitiserve last year. Before that my UPnP playback was all over the place; afterwards, it's been rock solid ever since. I'd just like to understand why doing any more than that might be necessary.
IF you do what I said, you will revert to DHCP, no need for SetIP Tools.
Good morning Manu. I did what you suggested the NS never reverted back to DHCP, the boys at Naim sorted the router access problem via remote log in in the end, I am sure if your fix was a fix for my unit they would have advised me to do the same!
Just got to update the firmware now.
Hi all just in case anybody needs the link to IP tool
Thanks to all, but a BIg thank you to Allenb, who has been a real gentleman, loads of help and advice day and night
