Will Naim be supporting the Roon App?

Posted by: GregW on 11 May 2015

Roon is a music library manager which can merge your computer, NAS and streaming service libraries. Initially an OS X and Windows App with support for Tidal. iOS and Android will follow apparently. Roonlabs developed the Sooloos system and recently spun out of Meridian.

Launch partners include, Auralic, dCS, Linn, PS Audio, and Meridian. As I understand it your Streamer/DAC acts as an endpoint in the the Roon app.

Computer Audiophile has a good overview of the app.

I would be interested if they make it work on servers/nases as a end user computer app its pointless.

Naim app is free and drives UPNP streaming, and Roon costs $449 and doesn't. No comparison for me.

I belive they are working with one or two manufacturers to develop an all in one box that server as the storage and Roon server. There has already been quite a bit of discussion about getting Roon up and running on Raspberry Pi devices.

As I understand it the idea was initially not to expose UPnP as many find it unreliable and difficult to configure reliably. By using local storage on the Roon Mac/PC and or mapped drives on a NAS people have access to all storage they need and Roon takes care of everything else. User facing UPnP will be offered it's just not a 1.0 feature.

Its clear by the many words that you like it Allen. I am genuinely interested in trying it once its a product it claims to be.

Right now  it doesn't stream all streaming services, it streams one.

Its not really a server. If I have to have my mac on, connected via network to my music shares before it works, then its no different to jRiver, Plex or the plethora of other media apps out there, many of which a free.

Its great that it presents stuff well for you, however to be frank if it has to run on my laptop there is this massive thing called google that will do all that for free.

One thing is for certain, the app will only be useful once they basically go back in time and just make the hardware again.

Its just stuff at the end of the day. No doubt the hardware they will sell will have the software built in job done, and only (insert any figure you like here, its for audiophiles)

I have no interest in something that requires a full computer to run.

They need to come up with a model that allows easy control from a tablet/phone and for any additional software that can't/doesn't run on the device to be able to run on a NAS to compliment existing music libraries.

I'm not sure I see the point in software that runs just on your device. Surely the information collation would be far more powerful if cloud based and was collaborative. The control point just needs to be a slick easy to use interface.

I agree with both points.  No interest in running a 'computer' for my music (although I run a uServe and a nas . . . it's a slippery slope).  AND, "Why can't this be implemented from the cloud?" is a great question.

In addition to the DAC-V1's USB out I have been able to use multiple zones with 3 Airplay devices. A B&W A5, Sonos Connect and a Sonos Play 1. The Sonos devices use AirSonos to turn them in to Airplay devices.

I have been following this thread from the side lines with interest.. However I need to come in on UPnP... it strikes me that a bad developer will blame their tools.. UPnP is a set of libraries for discovery and automation for amongst things such as media devices. There are profiles like the DLNA profile and other implementations such as used by Naim. The usability and experience is down to the application development, the UPnP libraries are just an underlying enabler.

After all the Sonos Connect and Sonos Play devices are all UPnP underneath the covers, and I love that user experience, and the experience is quite different from using the Naim app controlling Naim devices.

Yup, one proprietary database to another, seriously for longevity I would ditch WAV, stick with flac and tag them properly. Good that roon can read the naim database though.

Allen any idea how Roon figures out the .wav metadata?  Perhaps just from the folder/file names?

Out of curiosity I've tried ROON on the free trial and concur with many of the comments in this thread.

When I emailed them to cancel my trial, I received the below which may be of interest.

"Thanks for the feedback! We're working with Naim but there are no official timelines yet, so for now I've canceled your subscription and you won't be charged, hope to see you back soon."

Allen did you purchase the lifetime membership?

I compared the SQ of Roon vs Jriver on a retina macbook pro. Jriver appears to dig 'deeper' into the recording, meaning the textures etc are noticably more pronounced, and thus slightly more engaging. This is using the latest build with integer mode.

But I would say that I am not a critical listener generally and the SQ of Roon is more than acceptable for my needs.

There might be some sense in Roon offering those with 12 month subscriptions the opportunity to pay the balance to upgrade to lifetime if done before year 1 expires.
