Something is missing with music streaming...

Posted by: engjoo on 13 May 2015

I am not sure if I am alone. Lately, I seems to feel something is missing when I am listening to my hifi. I struggled to understand why despite the fact that now I have a better sounding system and access to a lot more music before. I think long and hard and I believe I have found my answer. I miss handling the CDs and operating a CDP.

Do you have similar feelings ?

I am not saying streaming is bad thing. It has its place and this is still the way to go moving forward. Just thought I realised that we as human beings still need the touch and feel of something physical.

What I do miss is to just stand before a cabinet, look at the collection of cds and then just randomly dive into one section in the cabinet, look at the titles and just pick something.

Searching and browsing an app just isn't the same. Every time, the app just starts again at the alphabetical sort order.

No, I don't recognise this description, so either I am 'not realising it' or you are suffering from a dose of nostalgia! I am still thoroughly grounded, own no watch or mobile phone, protect the nest of shrews in our undeveloped 'crazy cottage' from the local feral cats, talk to my neighbours and write real letters on real paper. Tech is a means to an end. I do agree other people are thick though

There is no way I want to buy albums on MP3 format via download.

For instance I was listening to an old Alexander ONeal album (hearsay) and loved the last 2 tracks on the album. Where I live now there is no way to buy the other albums.

And I only want to buy them on FLAC or ALAC via download.

The end of CD is not good for music loving folk.

Sure I will stream it once I buy it, but need to be able to buy what you like in the first place !

And the streaming services are ok, kind of a musical fast food, but those of us who bought Naim aren't into low audio quality music

I dare say no one who loves hi fi and spends on high end streamer players is or should be buying lossy downloads for home use. Don't overlook buying used CDs and ripping them yourself. That's a fine, inexpensive way to build a library.

I have turned off location services on my iPad and given the DVLA a moody address, that should confuse 'em!

I don't miss searching for and handling CDs but with the CDs ripped and stored away I occasionally miss the booklets.

+1 .. It would e great if there was some online way of browsing the booklets.. apart from for some hidef downloads I haven't found a way of doing this, and even for these it's a bit clunky.

If you use the unitiserve the problem is to some extent solved, as the info button provides you with album reviews and artist biography/ photos.

Are you talking about Rovi? Or does the UServe provide extra ripped/tagged info.?

I find Rovi no substitute other than it can sometimes provide an interesting album or artist review

Took me a long time to succomb to streaming but now I have there is no way I'd go back.

The convenience, comparable sound, exploring unknown artists etc.

We just use Wikipedia too when listening and wanting more info on an album.

As stated, I find the whole CD thing a very unrewarding experience, with one word that springs to mind "CHEAP" they just feel so nasty to handle, from removing the CD from the case, the case itself particularly those ridiculous hinges that break, to the actual CD. Just not nice, just my opinion, I appreciate we all like different things.......

It does seems that most have embraced streaming and there is no looking back. Perhaps my experience has been a different one due to the approach. I still see myself prefering something physical at times. :-)
