I have begun the day – and this will give a definite 'footprint' to it – with Respighi's Fountains of Rome. I lived in Rome between 1955 and 1958 and, strange as it may seem, the piece seems to carry something of that flavour. And (take the word of one who is fighting with orchestration issues daily) the two 'roman' pieces, although rhetorical perhaps, in a chronologically characterised way, are wonderfully imagined and written.
