Superuniti and PMC Twenty 23, soon to be B&W 805D's

Posted by: Doppy1977 on 25 May 2015

hi, I thought I'd share with this forum an upcoming change of speakers as there is very little on here about SU's with 805D's.

My change is borne out of a drunken bid on eBay ... I saw the 805Ds and thought they looked so good (piano black) and may also fix my "too deep bass problem" as my room is quite small....

So I bid a huge amount, was successful, and then had to explain to my other half, fortunately she thinks they look really pretty so I wasn't in too much trouble!!

The reviews are pretty darn good so I'm super excited, the speakers should arrive on Thursday, I'll post my opinions on here!

Isn't there a difference between the 805D and 805 diamond?

I always thought the 805D was the older one of the 2 and is more difficult to drive (this might be a problem for the SU)

But when I do a forum search I only read about people who are very happy with the 805D+ SU...

so probably a good combination.

Anyway, I think it's a smart idea to solve a 'to deep bass problem' with a high quality bookshelf

Thanks for the reassuring reply!! you may well be correct, I've just checked and they're actually 805 Diamonds that I've bought :-)

I had the same problem once with a SU + to deep bass and the 805 diamond was the solution a dealer suggested.

I didn't hear the combination but I think the guy is trustworthy...

In the end I changed the room, not the speakers ;o)

Ha Doppy your original post about your drunken bid made me laugh!

It will be interesting to know how you get on. Do you still have hold of your 23's so that you can compare? I would be interested to hear your comparisons

never visit they Bay when you're drunk!!

Posted on: 25 May 2015 by Doppy1977

Haha, it has made it a very expensive drinking session!!

i do have my 23's and will be happy to write my thoughts on the comparison!

The only time I've bid on evilbay while (just a little) drunk, I bought a Camplet trailer tent from a guy in Romford. We had six years of wonderful holidays in it and only sold it this spring. I think that if I had 23s (which I do) and too much bass (which I don't) I'd swap for some 21s, which are lovely little things.

Anyway, good luck with the 805Ds.

I have Uniti2 and 805D rose wood and they sound amazing , the only thing is that they really sing when on higher volumes( anything above 45 on the uniti2 volume level), other than that I am so happy with them , they don't however fair well with rock music if that is what you listen to. I mainly listen to classics and Jazz

Should drunken computing be compared to drunken driving?  Where another half is concerned they can both be fatal (even if only metaphorically in the latter case)!

P.S.  in NO WAY am I condoning drunken driving - ever.

Well taken Huge.  But yes I admit to a couple of bad decisions while 'online shopping buzzed.'  Nothing in the hi fi realm however.  (I did try a low offer on a slightly used Hugo just so I could hear it, anticipating needing to re-sell, but the seller apparently was offended by my offer and did not counter.)

Evening all, I said in an earlier post that I'd give feedback on my thoughts on the 805 Diamonds that I bid for on ebay ... and how they compare with the PMC Twenty 23 that I had previously.

Firstly, I was very relieved that the speakers arrived and were absolutely immaculate. Their condition wasn't actually stated on the eBay post, so this was a genuine relief!

I put them in situ, and my girlfriend - who has is incredibly meticulous with interior aesthetics (she doesn't even have a TV in her flat at she thinks they spoil aesthetics) said that the 805 Diamonds are much "prettier" that the PMCs .. And that the PMCs were more conservative, whereas these are more like a "boys speaker". Well I love the look of them too, but that's not what really counts right!

So the sound, to recap, I use a Superuniti, and NACA Cables, in a room thats approx 18ft x 15ft, and a semi-detached house, so I have to control the volume :0(

I found that the PMCs had too much bass when played at volumes that were optimal for me, making them not optimal for my neighbours! But the PMC sound was great at all volumes.

The 805 Diamonds, as mentioned by Mohamed, there is a minimum volume that level 32 or above, they are truly stunning, bass is controlled, timing spot on, and amazing clarity. That is assuming that they like the source and style of music ... Rock music isn't great, and low volume isn't great...

So to conclude, I love the 805 Diamonds, I'm having to compromise at low volume or when i play rock music, but, when I play something thats suited to them at a volume of 32 or above on the SU, they sing!! And although I loved the PMCs I'm not missing them because these are great!!

They don't sound like they are that great if they won't play rock music and are no good played quietly. That sounds like rubbish to me. I'm playing my 23s on 27 at the moment and they sound lovely. I think I'll stick with them.

Maybe. Or maybe only visit it when you are reasonably drunk!

So basically they won't play rock and are crap at low volume but they are still better than PMCs.  You'll have to trade yours in HH

Posted on: 10 June 2015 by hungryhalibut

I never looked at it that way! I thought my 23s were pretty good, but no. Bummer.

Haha, glad I bought my Focals now

Posted on: 10 June 2015 by Doppy1977

the 23's are great, the real solution for me would have been to get a bigger room with no neighbours attached and more distance from the walls ...

Posted on: 10 June 2015 by hungryhalibut

18' by 15' is pretty big, and certainly considerably bigger than my room, which is only 15' by 11' plus a bay window. I have no bass problems at all. The fact we have solid walls and a concrete floor certainly helps.

Fortunately my neighbour is as deaf as a post and a very nice man.  I liked the PMCs when I auditioned them, had I not bought my Focals I'd have bought the 20:23s but it really does depend on how they fit in your room and with your system. Hope you enjoy what you have

For sale: one pair of speakers, won't play rock music or quiet stuff.

or

For sale: one mixed crate of rock CDs and some Norwegian string quartet stuff (will impress niggly neighbours)

PS: Any GTR, Steve Hackett, VdGG, Italian Prog. going cheap?

Am intrigued, so what happens when you try and play rock music through the speakers?

Posted on: 11 June 2015 by Mohamed Amin
it is probably  recoding quality  dependant. listening to  Hotel California the 805D were Fab , but something like Aerosmith Get a Grip sounds dull, as if there is another layer of sound vail that needs to come off.
on the contrary they absolutely shine with classic and jazz , every note is heard with clear distinction and sound stage is super accurate

Ditch the Naca cable and source some loudspeaker wires from "Abbey Road ".  Your 805s will roll up their sleeves and get stuck in with rock.

Posted on: 11 June 2015 by TOBYJUG

Though I don't think Abbey Road cables are still made ! More eBay rummaging.
