Superuniti and PMC Twenty 23, soon to be B&W 805D's

Posted by: Doppy1977 on 25 May 2015

hi, I thought I'd share with this forum an upcoming change of speakers as there is very little on here about SU's with 805D's.

My change is borne out of a drunken bid on eBay ... I saw the 805Ds and thought they looked so good (piano black) and may also fix my "too deep bass problem" as my room is quite small....

So I bid a huge amount, was successful, and then had to explain to my other half, fortunately she thinks they look really pretty so I wasn't in too much trouble!!

The reviews are pretty darn good so I'm super excited, the speakers should arrive on Thursday, I'll post my opinions on here!

805D are not dull with rock music - they rock and are a spectacular improvement on their non-diamond predessors (as they should be given their price). Perhaps some rock music is too dull to disguise?!

I've heard 805D playing rock music and I thought they were the best sounding pair of small speakers I'd ever heard. It sounds like something is wrong with your system. When it comes to speakers and rooms all bets are off. The perils of buying without audition. Looks cost effective but is it really?

No reason why not, assuming you've paid a sensible price and can sell on for similar.

What is your time worth and how long are you willing to wait for a system that actually works?

Thanks guys, there is some really good info out here.
My just felt that Rock sounded a little "messy" compare to other genres but it's probably because I was using Spotify!

I'll play some more ... I do question NACA cable though, haven't hear of 'abbey road' cables before, what's the general view on other good cables for a decent price?

Before you go any further, I'd work out whether rock sounds OK when you are not using Spotify!

Guys don't get me wrong , I love my 805D and I mainly listen to Jazz and Classical and I agree that some Rock recordings are no great to start with , I'm using Toullirum black cables and very happy with that , I t was only my thoughts on few Rock rerecords I used

I agree Spotify creates such a lossy, coloured and compromised sound, I really don't think you can objectively rate quality speakers using it.. if the sound comes across muddled, I'd certainly bet that that is the Ogg Vorbis lossy codec doing its worst.

maybe you want to try to position your speakers in a better way:

- to much bass: place them further from the rear wall?

- to messy rock: maybe they are to close to the side walls? (to much reflections?)

just try, and try, and try...

Until recently, I had 805 signatures in my system for 13 years. When I bought them I'd never heard such transparency and resolution from a speaker before.  I've  also heard the 805Ds in an extended demo with an otherwise all Naim system and thought them a step up from my own speakers.

Unless the 805Ds are radically  different from my 805 signatures, I don't understand the comments about low volume.  I don't really listen to Rock, but it's true they are not speakers for  extended bass.  But then again, that's fairly obviously going to be the case with relatively small stand mount speakers.

They  seem like a pretty sensible buy to me.  I used DNM speaker cable with mine.

It will come down to if they can be made to work in the room, which appears not to be the case at present. All sorts of minor adjustments to the room and the position of the speakers therein can potentially make significant differences. Or not. They are not remotely a speaker which my ears would consider unsuitable for rock music. Quite the opposite. But we're all different, as are our ears, rooms and systems.

All these comments on Rock music  and 805D made me spend few hours with some of my Music namely Nirvana and Daft Punk and ..well, I found my self Dancing! Viva 805D

I must have had a memory of few bad Rock records, I'm off to rediscover my Rock collection
