ND5 XS wont display PNGs
Posted by: boggit on 29 May 2015
I recently downloaded a release from Hyperion, using their download manager. All appeared to be well, but my ND5 XS does not show album artwork. Looking at the files with dBpoweramp the artwork shows for each track but as a 700x700 .PNG - as shown.
Is this a problem with the Naim?
[Wonderful album, BTW!]
Its not the ND5, its the UPnP (app)
Using dBpoweramp
Delete the PNG art
Click on "Add Album Art", it will find a selection of .jpg pictures on www & press OK
Or in Windows Explorer, get into the album file & change the PNG folder into a .jpg
Are Naim likely to change the app such that it will display PNGs in future?
Interestingly, Hyperion did not supply any album files at all - only the embedded artwork so converting the PNG to JPG is not an option. I have done as you suggested and replaced with artwork from the web, but it would be a bit tedious to have to do this with every download from Hyperion.
I think I'll ask Hyperion for comments on both the use of PNGs and the lack of an explicit album cover file.
Thanks for the prompt reply!

With Hyperion the cover file can be downloaded by clicking on the cover image.
A bigger window will open with the full sized cover and by doing a right mouseclick and choose "Save Image As..." you can download the full size image file.
I believe it is by design to have do it this way as I have come across this method on several webshops.
Martin, what UPnP server are you using? I use Synology's Media Server, like Mike, and in the Browsing Settings you. Can control what the Naim App "sees". So by adding (say) cover.png to the list the Naim App will pick up anything in the relevant folder called cover.png.
I download from Hyperion too, And I get the png cover displayed no problem.
i also use Minim and that picks up pngs too.
Martin, the Naim app is not the issue, the app "sees" whatever the UPnP media server can read & send to it - I tried to keep my 1st post simple by UPnP (app), I should not have added the "app" bit.
Its no way tedious, I find it very simple & easy to rename the .png format to .jpg & is my normal edit method whenever I get a .png., it takes less than 1 minute when you are in dBpoweramp & a few seconds more if you are editing & "save as" .jpg in Win Explorer.
Or the good idea that Gary suggested is to add .png to the folder/cover list in your media server, it depends on the make of your UPnP server, mine is easy but I'm not so familiar with others.
I'm using Twonky 8.0.2 on a QNAP TS-420, and the settings are such that it should display PNGs - but it doesn't.
None of it's a serious problem, but thanks to you all for responding.
Just google it and download one of the million results you will find, name the download 'folder.jpg' and stick it in the album folder, its not rocket science. Actually I am surprised simply renaming a png to jpg works, learn something new every day.
The particular website you use to purchase music should get their act together, pngs? What is this 1994
