Nas placement

My current system is a unitiqute 2 on a hifi racks podium xs & PMC 20/21's on dedicated stands.

We're just in the process of moving the rack to the right of the r/hand speaker and whilst at it I thought about relocating my nas drives & switch.

I have plenty of rack space as the uQ2 is the only item using the rack at present and likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future.

All connections are via cat 6 ethernet cables, I dont use the wifi on the UQ2 at all, so would placing the nas drives and switch on the lowest shelf of the rack cause any issues?

It will not cause any technical issues,  however the things to be concerned about is noise & flashing LED's heard & seen in the listening room.

I have my NAS & switch in a closed cabinet that's close to the equipment rack,  the NAS in the cabinet is effectively silent & the LED's are behind the closed door.

It will work perfectly well on the rack, but the clonking can get really annoying. We recently had our broadband changed to cable and had the connection moved from the sitting room to the dining room. Now, the router, switch and NAS all live in the dining room behind a sofa, with a long cable running to the Superuniti in the sitting room. Not having the router and NAS flashing and clonking is just great and it's much more relaxing listening to music. So get all the gubbins elsewhere would be my advice.

My advice too.  If you can run ethernet cable, you can really locate the nas anywhere in your home that can be connected to your switch by a cable.  I paid the local hi fi shop's installers about $200 to run cable in my walls and it was well worth it.  I can now site my nas and router and switch and uServe well away from my system.

I agree with the above.. All whirring and flashing lights are banished from the listening room. Even the Ethernet switch for the listening room is well hidden and can't be seen unless you move the TV.

My Synology and switch sit in the loft, as far away from me as possible!

While I agree with all that the lights of your NAS can become annoying a good place for the nas also makes an audible difference. So if you can place it on the rack without seeing the flashing that might even be the better option.

I would be very concerned about temperature & humidity in a loft (attic)

Mine is very well insulated, but only to keep the house warm. This means the loft follows the temp & humidty that's outside.  I've seen ice all over the roof pitch & measured temps as low as minus 7'c, water condensation dripping & summertime hot enough to distort CD cases - & I'm living in UK, not Alaska or Africa.  For me a loft is not a place for a piece of live electronics & about as bad as it gets for an HDD & it's moving parts.  I would have a think about relocating.
