What else can the HDX do?

Posted by: ray sheldon on 31 May 2015

All,

I've had my unit for about 3 years now and have only really used it for ripping all my CD's and Internet radio.  I have a NAS  for backup and the ipad to control. I don't need to stream  content to other rooms etc.

I was under the impression that you can only store music on the HDX via ripping CD'S to it.
A dealer told me you can download music and send to the HDX for storage, is that true?

That would save me constantly buying a CD only to rip it once and it is never used again.

I have a laptop of course.

Any advice appreciated.

Ray, if your HDX has the 2tb internal hard drive and the most recent software, it will permit you to store "your own" files on it in addition to the files you've ripped from CD's using it.

When you browse to it, you will see two top-level folders, Music and Downloads.  Music is where the HDX puts its own rips; it is protected and you cannot use a computer on your home network to add or delete files from it.  Downloads is where you can store "your own" files, such as files you purchase and download from Qobuz or HDTracks, as well as files you might rip other than on the HDX.  But again, this is only if you have the most recent drive and software.  If you don't, authorized Naim service can upgrade the hardware and software for you (for a fee).

Hope this helps,

Bart

PS, this also opens up the world of hi res downloads to you.

Even with 1.5 firmware you can stream music from a nas or any computer on your Network. You can use usb Sticks for music also. Finally you can connect any iphone/ipod to the front usb on the hdx. The nas can backup the internal disk in the hdx, so you have 2 backups, one in the hdx on the second disk inside it, and another backup on your nas.

Both,

thanks for  your responses and apologies for my very late acknowledgement. It seems that I do in fact need to send my unit to Naim for the 2TB upgrade before I can think about downloading music to store on the HDX. At only £350, it's one for the future!

One further use for which the HDX is admirably suited is a heat source for slow cooking.  It never reaches frying temperature, admittedly, but it certainly maintains a poaching temperature all the while.

And of course there's no better product in the Naim range for supplementing your room heating during the winter months.

Admittedly, it's more for the second function that I keep mine running...  oh, and it serves up music files as well.
