Err what happend to the DSD firmware updates for ND* range?
Posted by: feeling_zen on 01 June 2015
Wasn't this supposedly in beta in early April (with good results at Naim according to one thread) with an intended release of mid May?
Does anyone have any more recent insight on this?
OK. Perhaps I was being a little generous. Yeah, there's been the odd bug that irritated but didn't stop the music flowing. No streamer update has squashed the music for me. Changed it sure. And not always to my preferred balance. But never to the point that I couldn't enjoy it any more.
unfortunately this did for me with i think firmware 3.16, can't recall exact version, to the point i had to buy an XPS. but thats old hat now.
What I should have said more succinctly is that Naim don't rush, everything takes longer and they *strive* to get it absolutely right and not compromise the musical performance. If in doubt about if something you'd like is weeks, months or years away, if nothing has been announced or hinted it's probably going to be months or years.
I do agree, almost , but i would point you to the release notes to the Naim app. The bug fixes are much longer than any version of nStream that I've seen. This could be many reasons though. Bugs happen, but to me waiting months to have them fixed i think is excessive. But thats me.
I bought my NDS for what it could do. Not for what it might some day do or didn't do. But we all come from different directions for different reasons, as is our wont.
I agree totally, i bought the NDX for what it was capable of and how it sounded. Now time has moved on and now, at least for me, the competition has moved on in both SQ terms and functionality. Now i have decided that i would like this functionality, so all i am asking is a simple direction Naim are going. I would like to make a decision and i would like to be able to base that on tangible knowns not here say. I am not demanding anything, i just don't see how Naim supplying this information could hurt.
To say we plan to add Tidal, DSD128, etc etc over the next 12 months, i would say great ill keep the NDX. No one is going to hold them to task if they don't deliver everything or on time, well i hope not.

A some time ago in a audio shop I listened to a Qute 2 and I was happy. I then took the big box from the nice man, who took the equally big payment from me and I went home.
I plugged in my Qute 2 and listened to the lovely sound and was happy. The nice man who took the big payment from me told me that I could listen to Spotify through my new Qute 2 and I could listen to the radio through my Qute 2 and I could stream music from my NAS or just plug in my CD player and listen and I was happy.
Now I've ploughed through this thread and read about streaming from Tidal or Quboz and being able to listen to sounds with unparalleled quality and I wondered?
Then I went and listened to my lovely Qute 2 and I was happy!
Maybe, instead of wanting higher quality sound which most of us won't notice the difference of, or longing for lossless streaming which a lot of us won't bother with or even getting cross because the app doesn't have the volume button in the right place, if we just enjoyed which ever Naim box we have which does whatever it was supposed to when we bought it, we could all be happy
Just my daft thought.
Cheers

Just when are Naim going to realise that the bakers' dozen sanctimonious 'members'' on thiis forum are actually really really important. It's an absolute disgrace. I demand that their demands are met in full, immediately, if not sooner.
If Naim think that all these sound quality upgrades to existing products, and new products at the very top, bottom and middle are good enough in todays world they are sadly deluded. And don't think that just because these software enhancements are free (and come without advertising on them or surreptitious add-ons) we'll wait any longer. And even though sound quality doesn't really get much better beyond 24/48 doesn't excuse this total lack of regular updates. I want more bits! How can I possibly enjoy my music when there is grass on the other side of the fence and I don't know what colour it is. Better than great is just not good enough. I move that we all descend on Salisbury this weekend and demand our teddys back.
What do you mean they shut at weekends? This is a 24/7 world, Mr Blair told me so. Oh right they could be open weekends and deliver everything immediately if they doubled the price of everything......... Okay then. Salisbury first thing Monday morning and we don't move till we get satisfaction. I have an extra deckchair, thermos and blanket for anyone else joining me.
Then I'm going down to see VW, Sony, Nikon, Juwel, Tag Heuer, John Lewis, Timberland, Marks and Spencer, SpeedyHen, HMV and all the rest of those companies who have taken my money and don't bother giving me so much as a Christmas card.
Oooh that was enjoyable. Now I have plenty of time on my hands I can come on here and have a good laugh at the narcissistic regularly . No that could be unkind. Not their fault they're so far up their own rectums they don't know when they are well off.
All the best
Andy
This is about as ignorant a posting as I have ever seen on Naim forums. And I have been here a long time.

Not daft at all, and an attitude that will probably keep you happy but far too sensible for this forum where you should at the very least be obsessing over your next black box/cable/firmware upgrade. Its a bit like being on drugs but more expensive. I hope you keep that view, but I doubt it

Indeed, perhaps why best ignored....
The ignore function (or whatever this forum calls it) is very effective, doesn't fragment the discussion unless used excessively, and has been filtering out this contributor for a long time. Highly recommended.
I wavered from the path when the Naim app didn't work properly on my new Sony phone. The hagiographs here on the forum told me it was my fault and I must have been pressing the wrong button. prompted me to seek alternatives beyond ND5 and Naim app, which I am about to start exploring when my Mac mini arrives. (Very happy with my amps tho.)
Still irritated by the spdif issue which requires a hard stop and play on the remote. Not fatal but another prompt to try something else...
Omg there's a block function. Harry you are a genius! If only I had known this during [that thread]-gate...
I think that if used sparingly it can actually make the forum more enjoyable. Less sometimes being more.

I have no plan to use it more than once. Thanks again!
If anyone found AndyPats post to be anything other than the tongue in cheek humour as was clearly meant then they are so far stuck up their own arse that all is left is the soles of their shoes.

Or perhaps English isn't their primary language
Or maybe they have some difficulties in language interpretation (either all the time or just occasionally).
Just a reminder that all things human are rarely as black and white as they sometime appear.
Well I think some of the posters that took a feux offence have English as a first language.
Lets get a grip people.
Naim roadmap...
Just think how much more frustrating it would be if you knew in advance what you couldn't afford.
Second lowest. Penis jokes are the lowest. (Here in the States we say "dick jokes" but that doesn't translate I don't think.)

gary i agree the post we are talking about, i say this as the one directed at myself was not, was indeed meant as tongue in cheek humour. However i think he totally misunderstood what the majority of us on this thread are trying to convey, so for me it kinda fell a little flat.
If you cant take the piss out of people and comments they make then life would be very dull indeed, and comedy would be nigh on non existent.

Now that I can agree with!
Peoples frustrations on this thread are first world problems. If they bought a naim streamer *hoping* for tidal integration then they made a mistake, naim only promised spotify, and they delivered.
As for the DSD, naim are working on it. It will be ready when its ready, people didn't die because of it. Allen is foaming at the mouth a bit. *
*I am seriously struggling to understand why people want to transcode a flac or what ever to DSD to send to the streamer for playback. Surely all you need to do is get the god damn bits to the player, what clothes its wearing are neither here nor there.

I was not aware this is what Naim are working on. I don't want to transcode flac to dsd, i thought the update was going to give us the ability to play dsd files as is. Or have i misunderstood you.

I think @garyi was speaking metaphorically....
converting FLAC to DSD for playback would be an extremely bizarre thing to do with almost certain questionable quality... certainly not come across anyone seriously contemplating that...

Thanks Simon
But this really outlines my point. There is too much speculation and miss information on here. If Naim placed a road map on their web site, none of this would be needed.
Hey if we keep banging on, you never know. Power to the people and all that. Now where's citizen smith when you need him
Interesting read to say the least. I suffer from the same frustration about the slowness of Naim's software upgrades. Find it hard to believe that Naim's secrecy about a roadmap is the right path.
A good friend of mine bought the latest Linn Exakt system and I envy the way Linn is updating the system on a regular basis. And yes, they disclose what they are working on... I had some listening sessions presented by Giliad Tiefenbrun and he talked about what Linn software department was developing for the future. The reason I stay with Naim is because I love the way it plays music. But I understand the frustration mentioned on this thread.

No, it translates just fine. As would the term "dick head" which also seems applicable.

Helen and I have seriously considered going in this direction because it reduces box count, provides some facilities that Naim doesn't and as you say, Linn and their dealers are comparatively open and relaxed about what is coming down the pipe. Rather funny really that the same sales people who clench their buttocks and get evasive about what's in the Naim pipe, or genuinely don't know, will loosen up, relax and gush out a comprehensive briefing about Linn's plans and direction.
Even after allowing for trade in it would be an expensive proposition. The funds required could also be set aside for the S1 streamer - if it arrives although some whispers say it's more a case of when. And all of this is academic compared to the musical performance on offer. Which is impressive. We spent an hour in front of the top Exakt system post the launch of room correction and apart from the ugly assed speakers there was nothing to dislike. We loved it. But we love our present system more. Naim’s presentation has a way of getting under our skin and grabbing us (in a nice) way) by our nerve endings that Linn does not. Linn seems to grab me by the brain whereas Naim is more by the gut. As opposed to feeling the effort and smelling the sweat of a good performance, Linn seems to play even Punk as if someone is standing in front of the band waving a baton.
So it’s back to the dark ways and mysticism of Naim for us with all its advantages and occasional stumble. That Linn system is mighty good though.
Harry, what a wonderful way to describe the differences betweem Linn and Naim! I've couldn't said it anny better!
The reasons you mention remind me just why I switched from Linn to Naim many years ago
Many regards,
Michel
