Album art in Naim app on IOS
Posted by: ken c on 07 June 2015
i often find that the album art has the generic 'Naim' or is simply wrong. I can go through this 'Not this album' dialog and if am lucky enough to find the corect one, select it. but i have failed to figure out how i can then replace the incorrect cover with the correct one. i am sure this has been asked before -- but please kindly provide the precisely instructions to achieve this. many thanks.

What is your UPNP server and what have you used to download or rip the audio? I have had problems with the wrong album art in iTunes as well as the Naim App. I find it is because the ripping software (I use dBpoweramp) or the downloading/streaming service has picked the wrong art. The album art is held as part of the files and can be changed.

sorry -- shouldhave provided these details.
Ready NAS Duo drive.
Music ripped via UnitiServe/SSD
Streaming via NDS
any more info required?

If you go into the folders via your PC you should see a JPG album art file in each album folder. Is that correct? Does it match what you are seeing in the Naim App?
I've got a Netgear ReadyNAS DUo and am having annoying problems with its UPNP server such as tracks showing as duplicates on the Naim App, wrong track ordering and wrong metadata. I'm going to install Minim UPNP Server.
Hi Ken,
If you're ripping cd's with the uServe, the album art should not be missing or wrong very often at all, unless you're ripping some REALLY obscure cd's. I wonder if you're having an internet connection issue such that the uServe cannot find the online database it uses to get the artwork (??)
Do you use Windows or a Mac at home? The easiest way to replace the artwork is with n-Serve for OS X (if you have a Mac), or the Desktop Client for windows.

thanks Bart. 'very often' is hard to quantify... its often enough to be annoying, but i believe its less than 10% -- at a guess...
i use Windows at home. i will try the method you suggest.... thanks...

Ken uses the UnitiServe -- it sets up the artwork etc. within it's Store. Those folders can be viewed, but files cannot be added or deleted using a computer. n-Serve or the desktop client is used with the UnitiServe. (He's not using the UPnP server built into the Ready NAS)
I have an issue with album art but it sounds as if it is a different problem from yours: What I find is that although the album image I have saved as 'folder.jpg' with the music files does show when browsing with the Naim app, and when music is playing, it is the linked (Rovi) database that is the problem, which whilst partly due to Rovi itself I think is also partly down to limitations of the Naim app:
When I go to view information while it's playing all too often the displayed album from the Rovi database doesn't match. And when that happens I guess at least half the time my searching through Rovi options still doesn't find - so sometimes the album simply is not in the Rovi database, and sometimes it isn't being found automatically. And when I can find the right album manually there seems to be no way to save that against the album to enable correct finding next time I want to view it.
I can't put a quantitative estimate on the frequency of the two different Rovi failings occurring, but for me it is also sufficiently frequent to be annoying.
clearly the limitation of Rovi's content isn't down to Naim, likewise if by whatever means of sourcing or storing something in my server the metadata is missing or incorrect, though I have no way of knowing if/when/what something I have done or not done might be the cause. However, regardless of cause and by whom, the ability to correct that having gone to the effort of searching the Rovi database and locating the right album would be very useful.
Meanwhile I have a lot of scanned images of album art and lyrics etc that I miss being able to view at my seat while listening, unless I fiddle about and separately use another program. Therefore another desirable addition to the Naim app would be a means of viewing any such files that may be in the album location through the app itself while the album is playing.
And another useful addition would also be the ability to access other databases of lyrics automatically linked to the music being played, though I suspect that may be a bit more challenging, given the already significant limitations of the Rovi link.
Hi Ken,
Hope you are fine. I use a UnitiServe and Ready NAS Duo as well and my solution for incorrect/poor quality artwork is as follows:
1. When ripping have nServe open on the iPad and check artwork once rip is complete.
2. If artwork is unsatisfactory, find the correct/better cover on the www. I use Ben Dodson's site which finds the majority of covers at decent resolution.
3. Save the image to the iPad's photo library.
4. Using nServe, select the 'edit' button for the album followed by 'change cover'.
5. From the options select 'from library'. You will then be taken to the photos on your iPad, including the cover you just saved.
6. Click on the image you want and hey presto! Shiny new cover installed.
Cheers,
Ian

You don't need to save the art to the iPad. Just change album art in the nServe app. It will do a web search for xxxx album cover. You just press the one you want and it's done. Do not tolerate that horrid missing art log thing.
You are most welcome!

You are right HH, you don't. However, the resolution of the covers that the web search finds are often quite low and I have this OCD thing about wanting all my artwork to be of good quality and pixelation free. Mr. Dodson's site allows access to the iTunes image library with all covers available at a minimum of 600x600px. These look excellent on the screen and remove the resolution guesswork from the Google based web search.
Of course, I totally accept that others may not wish to go to my OCD addled depths!
Cheers,
Ian
I'm kinda ocd about album art too; I generally download what I like onto my Macbook and then use n-Serve for OS X to do the deed.
