One of my all time favourites; I was lucky enough to see him about 15 years ago the Birmingham Town Hall.

A true original.

Change of the Century & The Shape of Jazz to Come, great ballsy titles and challenging Jazz. A real pioneer.

Some late 50's and early 60’s records of Ornette Coleman quartet are among my favourite Jazz records,.: Change of the century ; Something else ; Tomorrow is the question. The SQ  is quite good also.

I especially love Tomorrow is the Question!

So, tonight, Tears Inside seems like a fitting tribute.

RIP, Ornette, and thanks for 30 years of pleasure.

A lot of them. At the Golden Circle remains also a favourite. A jewel in 192k.

Heard him in Paris La Villette in September 2009. A rare moment of beauty..

I was lucky enough to see his last-ever (IIRC) UK gig, at the Festival Hall on 20th November 2011.

Met the great man afterwards, he was very frail (and suffering from Parkinson's and early Alzheimer's), which made the exploratory, almost aggressive playing just a few minutes before, even more extraordinary.

Good reviews of that show here:
