NAS going barmy

Posted by: thesmurf on 12 June 2015

Hi,

wonder if anyone can help?

I've been noticing for a while that my NAS is very active even when I'm not accessing it, I thought for a while that it was maybe indexing or defragging, but since changing to bigger noisier discs it's now become irritating! So using a process of illimination (unplugging one bit of kit at a time!) It transpires that when I unplug my Uniti Serve, the NAS goes quiet! Seems to be that the serve is keeping the NAS very busy, even when I'm not streaming !

Has anyone else noticed this? FYI it's a Netgear ReadyNAS duo running current firmware, as is my Uniti Serve.

Any suggestions on how to keep theier relationship harmonious would be gratefully received!

Thanks,

I have noticed, too, that when my UnitiServe is on the network, the nas that has a Share on it never goes to sleep.  If I shut down the uServe, it will go to sleep.  This would be a good topic for Phil Harris to maybe weigh in on.

It has come up before, and I think that some uServe owners reported a different result (that their nas did go to sleep).

Thanks for the reply,

I have the drives set to sleep after five mins of no use, and it used to work fine until the last FW on the serve, just wonder if the serve is just now continuously indexing or something?

No idea if this is related not, but my first Unitiserve HDD was silent for a couple of weeks, then suddenly started to make a whirring sound which I assume was the internal hard drive spinning. From that moment on, it never shut up, and it was too loud to put in the listening room so I had to put it elsewhere. I queried it with my dealer, who said it was within acceptable limits: with hindsight, I should have pressed them further on this, as it was mildly irritating, and I'm not convinced that it was unavoidable.

Fortunately (?) the offending US was destroyed by lightning, and the replacement is totally silent at all times except when ripping.

Oh dear, well at least your new one is quiet!
For me it's not actually the serve itself that's loud but my NAS when the serve is on the network,  have currently shut my serve down and the NAS had gone to sleep!

I was speculating that the (unknown) cause may be the same in both our cases - despite the fact that your NAS is external, and mine was built into the US, maybe they were both being told to keep on whirring away by the US?

The software searches for new files either on the shares visible used for downloaded files and also in any directories called music or as I understand it if the name of the directory contains music as part of the name. The simple check is to tell the server only to

If you are using the dtc go to the  tools tab.  Under music repositories scannable network shares. Here you can see a list of all the pc shares the server can see. If a share is online you can see if it is searched automatically. and use the button named "set scan type" and try manual instead of automatic.
The only drawback with this setting is that you have to rescan the share each time you add new files to it, and the  files will not show up instantly like they do when automatic is used.

Thanks Claus, I'll have a look at the setting, that sounds plausible.

My only problem is, I haven't actually changed this setting before, so why is it now driving my nas barmy, where it used to work perfectly before?
