Can't sync iPod with iTunes library on my NAS

This perhaps belongs in an Apple forum so apologies for that but I have had many a non-Naim query successfully answered on here.
After a recent systems overhaul I now have my music library stored in ALAC on my Synology NAS, which is connected via Ethernet to my Mac Mini which feeds my main system. All works fine when I want to play music through my main system (using iTunes on the Mini), but I have just spent over 2 hours trying unsuccessfully to sync my iPod with the library on my NAS.
Clicking the 'Music' icon in iTunes shows all my music, but when I attach my iPod to the Mini and try to sync it with my music library nothing gets synched despite me seemingly playing with every possible option setting.
I have set the iTunes media folder to the correct NAS share, though on starting iTunes I have to select my NAS drive from the drop-down list in the top-left corner first before I see the music files (as it defaults to 'This Computer' on startup).
When I connect my iPod I can see it in the iTunes window, and can click on it ok. However no matter what options I set within 'Settings'/'Music' (eg. sync only checked songs / sync entire library etc.) it always shows '0 Tracks' and synching does not do anything.
I have enabled compression to 256kbs. The iPod used to be used to synch using my windows laptop but I have reset the iPod to factory settings and configured it for Mac. I believe I have played around with all possible options for 'Manually manage files', 'Prevent iPod from automatically syncing', 'sync only selected files', turning the 'Sync Music' option on and off, etc. etc. all to no avail. I have also tried to google the solution without success.
Either Apple software is not as easy/intuitive as it is suppose to be or I am missing something obvious. Either way I am genuinely baffled and at a loss how to sort this out.
Any pointers ?
Many many thanks if you can show me the light ...
