Transcoding to WAV on the Fly from Synology

Posted by: Mr THX on 16 June 2015

Hi

Which Server software do you guys use which transcodes FLAC to WAV?

Problem being if I use the propriety Synology 'Media Server' it transcodes fine to WAV but when I play any concerts (Springsteen 24/192) it fails to play gapless...

If I use MinimServer it does play a concert gapless.... but I can't get it to transcode to WAV ?

Any ideas?.....

Have you installed the MinimStreamer part of the software?

Err no? Is this the bit I'm missing..... sorry for the stupid question but does this sit on the Synology OR the control source? (iPhone/Pad)

It's all on the NAS.

If you Google minimstreamer transcoding you'll find a link to the instructions page, including the specific transcoding part.

For some reason the latest Java update seems to have made my computer and minimwatch fall out with one another, so I can't paste the little bit of code I entered to make it work here, but all I did was follow those same instructions and it wasn't too tricky.

Cheers both, found all the pieces and I'm in business

Just checked and its transcoding, both to 16bit and 24bit and the Springsteen concerts are playing gapless..... excellent.

Also like that you can add a bit of album art which shows up in the folder view on MinimServer on the Naim App

Thanks

Chris

Is it difficult to install Minimserver and  maintain updates later on. What it will give me more that standard Synology mediaserver? I did not realized so far any problems with streaming 24/192

I can't comment on 'updates' as I've only just started using it... it is easy to get up and running though. For me it gives me Gapless playback when listening to live concert downloads..

I have a few of the Bruce Springsteen 24/192 back catalog concerts and enjoy the smooth transition of the songs without the breaks....

Updates, not sure as I've not had it long myself.

But installing, I'd say it's intermediate level stuff. You do need to install another programme (minimwatch) on a computer to manage it, and getting the codes to get it to function how you want right can involve a bit of trial and error. So it's not quite at the 'click here and everything magically sorts itself out' level of ease of use, but neither is it a half finished coding nightmare.

But I prefer the way it organises & displays my collection to the way the Synology software does it. Since the browsing experience/finding what you want, how you want is such a big part of using this kind of equipment, it's certainly worth the small amount of effort required IMO.

I had never heard of Minimstreamer before!  I'll have to see if I can get it installed on my Synology and QNAP nas's.

It basically just extends the functionality of the server app.

One nice thing to play with is the HLS high quality (~1500kbps) BBC radio streams, if that sort of things floats your boat (as it does mine). Googling should yield appropriate instructions.

Not available to us in the States unfortunately!

Are you sure?  As it streams direct rather than via iplayer or similar, I'm wondering if it bypasses regional issues.

I've had no issues downloading podcasts, for example, from numerous other countries, the States included.  Maybe it works like that?

I can't check at the moment, but as general advice, have you installed minimwatch on your Mac? That app is how you manage the server on your NAS.

IIRC it's via minimwatch that you check minimstreamer has installed correctly too.

Hi, thanks. I still wanted to find and install on NAS. Now it works
