Cover artwork - can I add artwork retrospectively on CDs uploaded without embedding cover?

Posted by: Dumb blonde on 16 June 2015

There are countless threads on problems with artwork but I can’t seem to find one answering in relation to the kit and process I use.  So apologies if this has been covered before, but the clue is in my name…I’ve got a superuniti and my music is stored on a NAS drive.  To rip the discs (Mac/ALAC) I’m using XLD as suggested by the dealer and now I’ve got to grips with adding artwork before ripping = happy.  However I uploaded about 40 albums without embedding the artwork first - is there any way I can add this retrospectively (it shows as a blank album on my iPad when browsing Naim app) or do I have to re-rip the lot in order to get the artwork showing?   Hunting around in both Naim app and Qfinder for the NAS and I can’t find a way to do this, or am I being dim?  Any help would be appreciated - it’s clearly not ranking up there with world events but it’s annoying so if there’s a simple solution please can you enlighten me?  Thank you

Thank you for the reply but i thought that i am quite fluent in English but I am lost.

My ripping program did folder The Cure - Disintegration with that album. What would be exactly jpg file name for it? In fact all my CDs are ripped this way:

Name of the group – Name of the album  What would be the “key” for jpegs?

Each album you rip will have a JPEG image called "folder" - sometimes with a downloaded album the same JGEP image is called "cover"

Look in the album to see all the tracks, the last line after the tracks is the Folder JPEG image line.

Thats the way all rips are done - JPEG is a .jpg - there is no need to rename anything

If you can't see that folder.jpg,  then you need to see what's wrong with your ripping software,  in that case come back with more clues

Once you have seen all the folder.jpg in each album ...... you are ready to set it up

In your personal Synology web page open Media Server  & then Browsing Settings

Halfway down the page is a check box marked "Display cover image for audio/video files"  - enable (mark) that box

Two lines below is "Filenames:"  In that line there should be  cover.jpg;Cover.jpg;COVER.jpg;folder.jpg;Folder.jpg;FOLDER.jpg

If not, copy/paste that programming line in

That is all you need to do

I am sorry to admit but it is not working on my NAS and IPad (remote control for NDX). Moreover I cannot see in some cases the artwork that was visible few days ago

I am getting to the point of not having many other ideas in reserve

I am not familiar with EZ CD Audio converter, in fact I have not heard of it,  so I really can't help,  but I do not trust that it can reliably "embed" cover art.

Go into your PC or Mac & in Windows Explorer or whatever is Mac,  open up the network & look into your NAS "Music" share,  you will see all the albums,  open up one of the problem albums & tell me if you see that the last line of the tracks is called "Folder" or Cover" JPEG Image line.   .............  that is what your EZ Audio converter needs to link to the album,  however it does that (???)

To correct earlier posts... Sonos uses UPnP internally.. It's just a more creative implementation. Additionally a Sonos can create its own database from attached storage as stated and it is also quite happy connecting to a UPnP DLNA media server. My Sonos connects to Asset as one of its options.

To Mike-B,

In the folder of ripped CD there is no additional file .jpg that is why I think that cover art is "embedded" in FLAC file. With regret i started to re-rip my CDs In the process I can chose the artwork and change the size to 500x500 and it seems to work....

Hi super mario -

If artwork that was previously visible in the naim app is no longer visible, you can try two things before doing anything to your files.

First, in the naim app you can clear the image cache (choose the "gear" icon at the top right corner of your streamer page to get to "Settings", then under "Other settings" in the menu, select "Clear image cache". This will force the naim app to re-load images from your server as you browse around in your library via the app.

Second, in the Synology media server you can force a "re-scan" of your library to ensure everything is found appropriately. If you are using the built-in Media Server, open the Control Panel, scroll down the left side menu and select "Media Indexing" (this is where you set up your library folder on the "Indexed Folder" tab), and choose the "re-index" button on the "Media Indexing" (first) tab.

If these actions don't help, you can try adding an image file to the folder / directory where you have an album (eg, into the folder called "The Cure - Disintegration" where you have the individual FLAC files for each track. You can use any JPEG image you like (you'll probably want the album cover, but who knows!) and you should rename the image file as "folder.jpg". This is the generic, default name that the Synology Media Server looks for to send artwork when your naim app requests it as you browse around your music library. As Mike says, it's the same file name in every folder / directory (although it will be a different image in each case, almost certainly you will choose the specific album cover image corresponding to the music files in the folder. This image should appear in the naim app...if it doesn't, something is mixed up in your settings.

You you can also live with embedded artwork, with each file (one per song) having its own embedded copy. Again, you will usually have the same album cover image for all tracks, but you don't have to. I am not sure how the naim app and the Synology Music Server negotiate this. But you can imagine that, for example, the embedded image from the (alphabetically) first file is used in the "Album" view, while the track-specific embedded image could be used on the "now playing" screen.

You you don't have to re-rip your CDs to change this, however. You can change the folder.jpg files around in your file manager / finder / File Station session, just like any other file adjustment you might make in any directory. For the embedded artwork, you will need a tag editor to edit the metadata for the music files. On Windows, MP3Tag is popular; on OS X, Kid3 is popular...but there are many to choose from. You can work through your file directories album-by-album and edit the various info, like artist, album, genre, etc., including the picture.

I hope this helps you move forward. Understanding metadata tagging is really useful as an aid to understanding wh the media server "sends" and what the control point "displays".

Regards, alan

Hi supmario,  sorry but I am now travelling away from home for 1 week & www connections are limited to evenings only.  You seem to be finding the answers with the re-rip & also alan33 has given some useful suggestions.  I suugest you follow alan33 & what you are doing & keep the forum updated on your progress

Handbrake is free open source software and should do the job nicely for you. You can then also convert it to just about any format   if you are unsure on how to go about it, type ''how to rip a DVD using Handbrake" in Google and you'll see plenty of tutorials. I think the same laws apply for DVD as with CD so I don't think it is strictly legal (in the eyes of the law) but as long as you own the original DVD I would have thought you will be fine. Have fun...
