UPnP when UnitiServe connected by wireless to network ?

Posted by: Jan-Erik Nordoen on 17 June 2015

Dumb question perhaps, but if I connect the UnitiServe to something like a Netgear wifi range extender with switch, or to an Airport Express, will the U/S appear as a UPnP server on the network ?

I've had my US connected directly to an Airport Extreme, and to both an Extreme and Express via a Netgear switch, and it's always been visible on the network, so I don't imagine you'd have a problem.

If it's connected to an Airport Express which does not also have a wired connection to your network, that might be less than ideal, though.

Thank you Chris. Yes, the range extender / switch will be connected wirelessly to the router, so that means two wireless hops during playback. This will be for occasional listening while the U/S is a second house.

I'm guessing you aren't able to put the US close enough to your streamer to allow a wired connection? I now have mine set up like that, with the AE also connected to the switch, but it only has to cope with wireless connections to the control app, and to the internet/router for Spotify, iRadio etc. It all works well, and SQ is certainly better using wired UPnP.

Correct, the U/S will be streaming wirelessly to a mu-so and a UnitiLite. I'll pick up a range extender / switch later today and give it a go. Any idea if the Apple devices (Airport Extreme and such) are preferable to something like the Netgear ?

I've only used Apple Airports, so I'm not sure about any others. I'm sure there was a post last year that Naim had tried a different make (possibly Netgear??) with good results. At least, with Apple, if it doesn't work for you, they don't quibble if you take it back for a refund.

In my limited experience, you'd be better off disabling the streamer wifi and using another AE at that end, too, with a short ethernet cable. The built-in wifi in my Superuniti was consistently useless no matter what I did.

OK, thanks for the feedback and the tip on boosting the wifi on the streamer. The AE units seem quite versatile.

Ive had great results with Airport Extremes; one connected to the switch as the main wifi provider, and one remotely to extend the network.  An Express, rather than an Extreme, to connect to the uServe should be fine.

Thanks Bart. We're almost all Apple here, it all started with an iPod Touch... Looks like the AE is way the go.

All things being equal, I'd stick with Apple for wifi if you're an all-Apple home (like we are).

Jan-Erik, just to be sure, I've disconnected my US from the switch, and connected it to a spare Airport Express and nothing else. It works. All I did was pause the streamer and 'hot swap' the Ethernet cable, then pressed play again. No restarts or anything, it just worked. So you should be fine.

The unitiserve should appear on your network as a UPnP media server if connected by wifi. If the wifi is congested or is a poor connection it may 'disappear' from time to time even though it is still on the network.

Range extenders can be troublesome things. I find with Apple Airport Express it works best when extending an other Apple wifi access point.(this is what I have currently for convienience in the front of the house) But even then performance can be disappointing at times. The best way I have found to extend wifi, is to use wired connectivity to each access point! or have a receiver, connect to a switch, and then have a new access point off that switch (or even connect directly if you can). This way you would use two seperate SSIDs.

Everything I read says that the extended portion of the wifi network should be slower, but I seem to easily get 80Mbps.  If I understand things, 802.11n tops out at 300Mbps, so if 80 is "slower" it's still got plenty of headroom vis a vis my broadband connection.

I pay for 75 up and down, and usually get 80.  So no complaints.

Success, afer two minor setbacks. At first I let the AE set itself up (not realizing that it defaults to creating a new network). After a bit of searching and resetting the AE, I restarted it using the “Join an existing network” option. From there, the UnitiServe became visible to the mu-so and the UnitiLite. Oh Joy! Cued up a track on the mu-so, pressed play and… nothing. Tried on the UnitiLite and nothing there either. Solution : moved the AE and UnitiServe closer to the mu-so and… Bingo !

Thank you Chris, Bart and Simon for your help and comments. I’ll do a speed test tonight, just for the heckovit*.
