My reading of the information published is that the UK Government has be told to go away and been given time do one of three things

a  Provide more evidence that the loss is 'minor' and appeal the rulling

b  Outlaw all copying of copyright material without written consent

c  Provide a compensation scheme for the rights holders

Note this is the rights holders, i.e. usually the music publishing and recoding companies not the artists (who are usually forced to sign over their copyright for a contract of royalty payment).

Mark,

I tend to think that Orwell is much overrated. In his view, the present society should be a worse version of the Soviet Union, where Control is held by an abstract and blind political power for abstract and blind reasons - to Control.

We live in a world where power and control are in the free hands of the Capital, and are used to control economically, and where those who have the power are the free, and those who haven't are doomed to slavery. This is Middle Age, and a very right-wing one.

The only thing that Orwell was right about is the hideous power of television, but ours needs not having an eye on us, because he hadn't understood the television's power of imbecilization, which makes any further form of control useless. People now control themselves perfectly.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree - I think he was very prescient, all the more amazingly so because he foretold the power of the network without having any clue as to what it would be.

I think the handwriting is already on the wall, between our web activities, smart phones, texting, GPS, automotive tech, online payments, credit & debit cards, and the eventual elimination of cash.

We are not there yet, but considering the pace of technical advancement and how each iteration builds on the previous, it is only a matter of time before all this data can be aggregated and brought forth for use if when needed.

This will allow total access and a means of control of peoples' lives.  And the elimination of cash opens the door to negative real interest rates as well as the means by which to control all commerce.

In most cases it will not be needed, but it is there "just in case" it is.  As James Clapper so aptly demonstrated, they will lie as to what they are doing and how they are doing it...which we only found out because of the Edward Snowden revelations.  (BTW, why hasn't Clapper been charged with perjury?  Oh that's right, there's a club, and we ain't in it.)

I think Orwell was incredibly prescient - just give it another 10-20 years.

To those blaming the EU... You realise don't you that without the relevant EU directive it's likely that the UK would have remained with the historical position that personal copying is illegal; it was only because of the EU directive that the personal use exception was even considered.

Very deep argument!  Slogans are so meaningful aren't they.

If we leave, I hope you enjoy the decline in living standards which will follow.  We shall be just like Greece but without the sun

I thought all countries in the EU are equal, but perhaps some are more equal than others!
