Is the Unitiserve, Naim's most Unreliable component?
Posted by: CSI_Basel on 22 June 2015
Hi All
I've owned a lot of hifi components from a lot of different manufacturers over the years and I have to say the Unitiserve has been the most unreliable.
In 3 yrs, its spent almost 2 months at the dealer getting repaired - 2 hdd failures!
I've been reading this forum for a few yrs and its always the unitiserve that gets mentioned with issues!
What do you guys think?
Hi
from what I have seen, those who use it for streaming to a network player have had problems more than those who use it connected to a Dac. Maybe some issues with home networks are causing the serve failures !
Nothing but problems myself. Now I use USB into a Dac V1.
I have the orginal Unitiserve and apart from 3 power supply failures it has been rock solid,
I gave up with the Naim PS and since then no more issues,
Mine is connected to a ndac,
Have to say its my favourite Naim product & now the N-Serve app has been updated to stop all the crashing I'm happy.
Just wish Naim would update the firmware or the app with some new features.
My experience is the same as goonerdude. I'm on my third PS, but no other problems. The dealer was able replace the power supplies immediately and the current one is a new, more reliable design.
The biggest issue is that ripped FLAC files aren't tagged properly so other servers can only see them as folders.
It is certainly the most overrated and the one offering the least value for money!
My first 1TB unit had some issues and was eventually replaced by a new 2TB unit, which I've had for two years. It has performed flawlessly despite being transported weekly between two different houses ; there must be something wrong with it.
The stock switching power supply has also been faultless. I cannot say the same about the Israeli *linear* suppy, which turns out to be based on a switching power supply and on which the voltage drops to 10 V when ripping a disk, causing the U/S to shutdown.
The UnitiServe has seen off all contenders so far in, whether running it into a DAC, or as a UPnP server.

Mine is off to Aduio Plus Services for the third time in six months. Hoping for a new replacement. I also used it into NDAC for a year but my issues were network, slot reader failing, power supply failing and internal electronic parts failing. Last six months serving on the network to NDX. Right now it's a door stop but in the hands of UPS.

Generally speaking, a SSD is silent, fast, and far more reliable than HDD. I realize they cost more, but are there issues with the SSD UnitiServe units?
I guess the difficulty is knowing how many have been sold and how many have problems. For me, it is how the issue is sorted out. Having worked in customer service for a German car manufacturer it was particularly difficult when a car would come back with the same issue time and again, when thousands of other cars fitted with the same parts were fine. It was also interesting that if a problem car was changed, the replacement car sometimes suffered the same issues, and the old one when sold on, was trouble free. It is terrible when a quality product has an issue, however if something goes wrong once, that can be life, two is extremely frustrating and leads to a lack of confidence but a third requires more investigation and could indicate an issue. I hope the issue gets sorted speedily with as little problem for you as the customer.
I think HDD is the problem. If you take a look at customer ratings of 2 TB HDDs on Amazons HP you'll always find a lot of people who have failures with new HDDs. Maybe SSD would be the better solution, as 'joerand' suggests. But 2 TB SSDs are still very, very expansive...
Best thing would be HD-Internet streaming, IMHO...

Yes, mine is SSD but the SSD seems to be fine.

My only issue was a failed hdd after 3 years. I do not blame Naim for that.
