HDX Versions
Posted by: heihei on 04 April 2011
A dealer is offering me what appears a good deal on an ex-dem HDX. It's the 2x400GB version but will have the latest software installed. Anyone any idea of what has changed since this version?
2x500GB HDDs
I THINK there may now be a one disk 1TB option now.
SSD HDD
New PCI Card
Expanded RAM.
The costs for upgrade are:
PCI/Ram = £250
SSD I was told £600 - but have seen people state £750 on some threads.
I believe the move to 1TB HDD is not available as an upgrade.
I recently bought an ex-dem NS01, and bought it after doing a comparison with the UnitiServe - both were good, but I preferred the NS - despite the US having the new PCI, and the NS01 the old one.
In fact the dealer agreed to get me a new PCI/RAM at a negotiated cost, which is now sitting upstairs in its box, why? Well, I LOVE what the NS01 is doing ...but couldn't prevent rampant paranoia from persuading me to take the PCI offer while it was on the table!
The RAM allows the HDX to function somewhat faster apparently.
HDDs. Mine has the dual 500GB. People do describe an upgrade with the SSD, but it seems to be of a smaller order.
Personally I am happy with the HDDs.

The current HDX also has a BNC SPDIF digital out. Not sure if the 2x400GB version can be modified into an SSD version, newer HDD versions can. Apparently the 400GB HDDs are slightly noisier than later HDD versions, this may or may not be an issue depending on your perception of what noise level is acceptable.
All HDX units with 2 x 400GB / 2 x 500GB / 1 x 1TB hard disks can be converted to SSD, and have the PCI card upgraded to HD PCI–but the digital out remains the same.

I have just purchased approx 4 weeks ago, one of these units , and also purchased after demo a brand new nDAC to put on the end. The HDX on its own is fantastic, I previously had a CDX2 which I traded, -HDX better, but with nDAC - far far better, different league.
You will not be dissapointed, especially as there is a huge saving. The unit has been upgraded to latest software spec prior to purchase, as far as I am concerned its a bargain ( fi you can have such a thing with Naim gear !! LOL). The DTC is great and also the app for the iphone brilliant. I havent played vinyl since I have had the HDX, because it really lets me listen to the musicians track after track.
Let me know how you get on.
