Upgrading the auditory system
Posted by: Jan-Erik Nordoen on 07 April 2011
We'll go to endless lengths to improve our sound systems, but what about the auditory system ? What works best, in your experience, to improve perception and enjoyment of music (legally, that is)

Sex and a glass of something pleasant.
Cant find this in any NAIM manual though!

"Sex and a glass of something pleasant.'
Don't put it in your ears though!
Try audilclean from a chemist (Boots do it); if in doubt visit your G.P. No system is worth a dime without good hearing.
Sodium Bicarbonate ear drops, v cheap and v good, also from Boots.
Comfortable recliner....later at night the better....lights off.
No coffee, no booze, no drugs, exercise, fresh air, peace. Listen to one or two pieces a day. Cut out background music. Sit up straight.

We are listening to music?
Not at boot camp?
Learn to hum the tunes you like in the correct key :-)
Best free tweak I know: Take off your glasses.
also turn out the lights.
Then you cant see the miserable hifi system that you have, and you can then imagine that it is what you desire it to be.
You can then turn to the wife and imagine that she has become as beautiful as your fantasies have told you.
Damn then the cd finishes and reality is about to set in
So you stumble looking for the glasses so that you can find the light switch to turn the lights back on
AND DESPAIR Shatters the previous illusion.

David,
Oh dear, you've gone from 'sex and a glass of something pleasant' to 'despair' in 10 days.
Anything we can do to help ?

I Blame Nick Clegg and the to be or not to be A / V voting.
I hasten to add that i am quite content with my HiFi systems.
But there is a spare listening chair for someone of the female persuasion.

Marrying a musician also helps (she's a pianist and flautist .....marvelous fingers don't you know)
Joking aside, actually learning to play an instrument myself has enhanced my enjoyment. After four years learning guitar and murdering the classics (Stairway to Heaven, Europa, More than a Feeling, Goodbye to Love...) in the privacy of my own home, it is so much easier to appreciate the musicianship of others.
.....the wife says it's great when I stop.... at least I think she's referring to my plucking?
