NDX not seeing tags - help!

Posted by: DQ on 10 April 2011

Hey,

NDX landed and hooked up to server no problem. However it sees neither the embedded tags in wav files nor the XML information nor the cddbinfo. It sees track name but that is it.

Any ideas?

This sadly will very much depend on how they were tagged. WAVs really are a pain in the arse.

Gary,

Thanks for the fast reply

They were tagged two ways

1) Using a HDX - it is not in this system now so it is not acting as a server

2) I also ran DBPowerAmp to do tag from filename and can see those tags are on the files

None of it comes through

DQ Which UPnP server are you using?

Steve,

Am using a Western Digitial Mybook Nas - all I did was to switch on the UPNP option in the network settings. It is also running Twonky media server

Did I miss something?

Well presumably the HDX will have tagged correctly for the NDX, so it comes down to your UPNP server

DQ The relationship between metadata, file structure and different UPnP servers is a complicated one. I think you need someone to answer your question who has experience of Twonky as it can be made to work. I've just never managed it. As a temporary fix try dBpoweramp's Asset UPnP server on a PC on the same network (set to look for the music on the NAS) and that should give you better results. If it doesn't it might point to a metadata issue. if it really doesn't help at all the paid for version of Asset will let you find music by File Structure. there is a demo version that works for a week I think. Not possibly a long term fix but good to get you enjoying your NDX.

Asset uPnP is free for 30 days and as SteveH says the best way to locate the problem is to install it on a pc (or laptop) attached to your network with some wavs on it. If the NDX sees that then the problem is with the a lacking uPnP in the WD Nas

I would check into your NAS via a browser and check the UPNP server is set to dish out all the detail you want. Certainly on the QNAP you can ask it to show various stuff or not.

ONe other thing if you have a large library you may find the NAS takes a long old time to create its UPNP database.

Thanks for the good advice. I looked in through the user interface and twonky is not seeing the albums or artists, so neither is the NDX! Have to figure out why twonky does not like my music. Buggy!

In twonky there is a section called share (I think) that usually has a default location set, bacon on my QNAP thats 'qmultimedia'. the twonky will scan only this folder. There is also some spaces under it to add you own folder. Check your are sharing the correct information it might be your music is in the wrong location for the twonky.

I am pulling at straws now to be fair.

The last option is that the HDX understands how its tagged its music and would share correctly. Most people do not have much luck with HDX and Itunes for instance

Very few UPnP servers support tagged WAV files. Our servers rip in WAV format but keep the metadata in an XML file so if you point a 3rd party UPnP server at Naim ripped WAVs it will use the folder structure rather than the metadata to present the music to a UPnP player.

As you are using a Naim server to rip and you have an NDX I suggest you use the UPnP server in the Naim server rather than a 3rd party solution, this will give you the best integration all round.
