User experience with NetGear Ready NAS Duo
Posted by: ken c on 18 April 2011
Hi Folks,
Totally green in this field, but finally buckled to the "digital trend" which at my age must be a miracle. I have therefore ordered a UnitiServe SSD (already have nDAC) -- (yes another box, but i guess thisneed not be in the same room as my main hifi). Now i realise i need a NAS drive -- and reading through the various previous posts on the subject (and getting more and more confused), seems the above is a "good" one and a good match for the UnitiServe SSD.
I'd be grateful for any user experience of the above NAS drive.
I was also looking for a noddy guide to set up/install when i get the 2 boxes in the house, well 3 including the nDAC i guess. So any pointers would be useful. I know zipo about this area, so please be gentle.

If you buy a lot of stuff from Amazon, it is useful to suscribe to Prime-next day delivery for free. Last week I ordered something at 17.00 on Friday, and it arrived at 09:30 thje following day.
well, didnt even notice this in the rush. Ah well, next time then, thanks Gerry. Hopefully the Ready will just work when it eventually comes. i will have a special shelf 'ready' for it...

Just to reply - I have setup the Readynas to power off at night. Also the disks spin down after a period of inactivity. When searching from the Uniti the NAS is definitely up and on, but the disks might be in a spun down state - so unsure whether this affects discovery of the device. I wouldn't want to leave the disks spinning all the time
Hi Ken
They seem to be taking longer and longer these days to deliver. Mind you being a cheap skate I do use the free delivery option.
Any news on delivery time for your Serve?
Our dealer is going to come to the house on Tuesday and spend an hour or so and offer his opinion on best way forward with our system; we both suspect the speakers but a Serve could also be on the cards.
By the way, I use Virgin Media but have a separate cable modem to which I connect my own router and smart-switch; I don’t have their TV service.

Hi iburnell
I did wonder if you were using spin-down. That will be the reason for the delay in the Uniti connecting again. There is nothing wrong with the way you are using the NAS if you can live with the delay fair enough. It’s your choice.

i opted for the free delivery option too, Peter, partly because i am a cheapstake too, but also because last time i did this, the goods were still delivered the following day anyhow. i guess this depends on ultimate supplier, so i was just lucky.
no news on delivery -- i will ask my dealer.
i have the extra large service(?) with their modem and router. i dont have their TV service. of late virgin has been going up and down -- i hope this will not affect the ReadyNas and the UnitiServe in operation (i doubt it). So, you dont have a serve yet. what are you using now then?

I ordered a Qute for my office but put it in the Lounge when it arrived, and sent our amps for service. By the time the amps returned we could not let the Qute escape so having followed AllenB’s write-ups of his trials with the Serve, HDX & Qute into nDAC, decided to trial the nDAC ourselves. We very quickly bought one.
So, its Readynas, Qute nDAC at the moment, and really it is amazingly good in our opinion. Of course if we do get a Serve the Qute can finally arrive at its intended destination; but then we will need a tuner. And so it goes on.

Peter, that sounds very familiar to me... hopefully for me the electronics shouldnt change for a loooong time now. I am using a mixture of racks right now, 2 Fraims and a 5 tier Projekt. I would like to replace the latter with a Fraimlite when bank account permits. but lets see how this immediate project with the NAS and UnitServe goes. Phew!

...oh and don't forget the PSU on the nDac. My really came alive with the 555PS.
Gerry………..We added an XPS to the DAC within a month. I refused to even contemplate the 555, we like to eat sometimes you know.

Ken…. If our system was anywhere near yours (or Gerry’s) I would never darken a dealers premises again. In fact that is a rule I managed to maintain for several years. I slipped when I started to like the idea of streaming and then heard about the then forthcoming launch of the Qute. Note to self, must regain my discipline.
I am very hopeful that you will be very satisfied once you are all setup.

Peter,
... Till Gerry mentioned the idea of a power supply for the nDAC. I had completely forgotten that! I have a 555PS that is currently doing juice duties on the CD555. Having just made another compulsive purchase recently, descipline must be restored, and I should not entertain the idea of a dedicated PS for the nDAC, because surely this must end somewhere, one must get to the bottom of his slippery slope?
Oh my...

However, do try the 555 on the nDac, it was this that transformed (no pun intended) the sound quality. Originally I had an XPS2 for the nDac but I tried the CDS3's 555 on the nDac, and it's not going back.
Ken
Ah, sadly your warning comes to late.
An XPS has resided on the nDAC since it was 1month old, an almost obscenely quick addition I know but we were reorganising the lounge and realised that if this was something we wanted we would have to split the rack into two, so we had to try one. Once we heard it we order one.
I have never heard the 555PS (and intend it to stay that way) but I tell myself that it would unbalance the system, and I am happy to believe that.
Many thank for your warning though.
Regards
Peter

Gerry….. I can’t hear you,,,....
I must be strong……anyway neither of my local dealers have a 555 to try….. I must be strong………
I need new speakers....... still trying to be strong.

Ken…….. It’s worse that that he is visiting the house next Tuesday!
He is bringing his own music before listening to ours to enable him to offer an opinion.
I feel a pain in the wallet coming on.
Where did I go wrong?

Love of music, bad idea... that's where problems begin. You need to join a suitable "anonymous" group for some therapy. You know the sort of thing -- "Dont be shy Peter, you are amongst friends -- tell us your story...". You might see me there...

OK guys. The ReadyNas was delivered today. So i am in the middle of setting it up right now. I have selected the static IP address option for it. The default address assigned was 192.168.0.103
I have assigned a static address of 192.168.0.99 (there was no science to this choice -- it had to be outside the current DCHP range 100-199 which my router reported).
Now im in my D-Link Router LAN setup menu -- and i can see that host nas-BD-7D-52 has indeed been assigned the above IP address that i specified. But i note there is a "DCHP Reservation" option, which appears to be giving me the option of specifying, "Computer Name", "IP Address" "MAC Address".
Do i also specify the host nas-BD-7D-52 in this section in addition? I seem to recall you guys suggested this?
So far, the installation process has been quite st fwd -- i am just a little nsure about my router setting.
I am hoping the UnitiServe will be just as st fwd when it arrives.

Hi Ken you do not need to reserve an address if you have set it up as static.
As long as your music files are in a share with music in its name, the Unititserve is even easier to set up than the NAS it sould find this automatically. However, the music files themselves may take some time to show through, when located in a network share. With music stores the process is instantaneous.
Cheers

i have reserved it already. does this do any harm? do i need to change it back?

Hi Ken
It won’t do any harm to leave it. Glad that you are finding it quite straightforward. It’s usually harder to explain than it is to actually do it.
Good luck with the Serve when it arrives. Look forward to reading your impressions.
Peter
Seems you are getting to grips with the router/NAS set up. As you will probably have realised, not every router is the same and accessing the reserve / static address menu is somewhat difficult to give advice on unless you are in front of the PC and doing the honours.
Not much chance of doing any damage BTW.
Tony
Hi Peter, Tony, Gerry and all the others that helped. Part of the reason why the setup was so st fwd is that you guys were so helpful. Many thanks guys. I guess i can always reverse this reservation if it causes trouble in future. Now waiting for the 'Serve -- hopefully this also will be just as st fwd.
