User experience with NetGear Ready NAS Duo

Posted by: ken c on 18 April 2011

Hi Folks,

Totally green in this field, but finally buckled to the "digital trend" which at my age must be a miracle. I have therefore ordered a UnitiServe SSD (already have nDAC) -- (yes another box, but i guess thisneed not be in the same room as my main hifi). Now i realise i need a NAS drive -- and reading through the various previous posts on the subject (and getting more and more confused), seems the above is a "good" one and a good match for the UnitiServe SSD.

I'd be grateful for any user experience of the above NAS drive.

I was also looking for a noddy guide to set up/install when i get the 2 boxes in the house, well 3 including the nDAC i guess. So any pointers would be useful. I know zipo about this area, so please be gentle.

still ripping... this is going to take a while, but i'm in no hurry.

what backup strategies do you guys use for your music? Is it "enough" to just have 2 hard disk units in a raid configuration on the ReadyNAS?

You should really copy stuff onto a separate drive periodically. Altlough raid is safer than one drive, you could still accidently delete data, get a virus (probably not likely on a NAS), or the NAS itself expires (although you may still be able to get data off your drives).

 Hello Ken

Good to hear that you are up and running. As Steven says please do backup, either to another NAS or a USB drive. Does the Duo have a Backup button on the front adjacent to the USB port, just plug in and press the button, job done!

Enjoy the music

Peter

Many thanks Steven & Peter. Ok next purchase, a big USB drive to connect to the NAS.

I am still playing the rips without p/w on nDAC. it sounds OK unless i turn the volume a bit higher. I will connect 555PS to it when i feel like messing about with burndies behind racks.

Hi Ken,

I use a Radynas Duo, and have added a 2TB USB hard Drive which I back up weekly.  To do this access the NAS via the web browser, and the Backup menu, the sub menu has an option to add backup jobs which you can schedule to activate to a schedule or set manually. The manual option allows you to backup at any time either from the browser menu or (as per Peter) from the front button on the duo.

It took me nearly 4 months to rip my collection, I am not sure I would have managed it without the Serve.

thanks Gerry -- i will try to pick up a USB drive today, 2TB sounds right -- i have ripped enough music now for it to hurt really badly if something goes pearshaped. :-(

Very interesting. I was looking up these things on the likes of Amazon and it seems to me there are more than one type of ReadyNas Duo. Are the different models significantly different?

Frank,

I could be wrong but I think there are just 2 Duo models one diskless RND2000 and one with disks RND2100.
