Setting up DTC for HDX

Posted by: Jason on 19 April 2011

Hi,

I have been running desktop client for my HDX on my laptop for the last few days without any problem.

Today, however, I have installed DTC on my desktop, which is where I will probably do most my editing etc.

Having installed DTC on my desktop the "Connect to Naim" box opens and asks to "scan for hard disk players".  Problem is that when I do this it is not finding anything.  I know the HDX is OK and on the network as I can still run it on my laptop and it easily connects to that. My laptop is connected to the same network as my desktop and the HDX, it is the only network I have.

I believe that this is an issue with my desktop but cannot think what.

I can run the web interface on my desktop through my browser and that works and controls the HDX fine, it's just that DTC cannot find the HDX to connect to.

I have configured my firewall to allow exerything for DTC but still no joy.

Any ideas?

I also had this problem running vista. Phone naim they will talk you through the problem. Sorry but I can not remember how they rectified it.

Firewall issue? Had a similar issue a few days ago when (OSX) firewall settings had been changed accidentally.

EJ,

I've messed about for hours today trying to sort this.  Haven't phoned Naim yet because I was sure it was a problem with my PC and I've had little feet running around today so would have waited to phone until a quieter time.

I've been playing with the firewall settings, changed everything to do with DTC in my Firewalls program control to allow it access, but still nothing.  The only thing I didn't try was turning the firewall off completely and off course, having read your post EJ, I thought I'd better try that.  Guess what...?..yeah it works now!

I can't understand why, I've fired up the Firewall again now and DTC still works OK having not changed any settings since I turned it off!

This is exactly why I decided to go HDX instead of NDX....I think if I had tried setting up an NDX with my computer and a separate drive etc, I would have pulled all my hair out by now!

Thanks and all the best,

Jason.

Maybe it was one of those "first day" issues you experienced earlier, too. I am happy that you get your problems solved when you just get a deep breath and try again later. My experience is that it is good to let devices take a deep breath, too.

Only thing I want to object to is your estimate that NDX would be more difficult to set up. My NDX did not need any set up at all and was ready to play anything on my network in five minutes.

Aysil,

I'm positive the NDX itself is a very easy piece of equipment to setup and use, as Naim equipment is planned and designed to be - and inevitably is.

My comment of concern in setup is not aimed at the NDX in any way, more at my own experience in trying to use/setup networks.  Everytime I try to do something I seem to get a problem on my network, partially due to my in-experience and partially due to the fact I seem to have a very temperamental wireless router!

Just so as to set that straight

All the best,

Jason.
