Tagging - What's it all about.

Posted by: fatcat on 19 April 2011

I've just started ripping CD's to my hard drive in WAV using DB Poweramp, The folder containing the rips also contains a JPEG of the album cover, but it doesn't seem to include the metadata that Poweramp displayed.

My intention is to stream using sonus or SB Touch, BUT, I've been reading that SB Touch won't recognise tags with WAV files.

What are Tags, are they in the Poweramp rips or do I need to tag the files.

What are the implications of tags not  being recognised.

I'm trying to avoid ripping a couple of hundred CD's incorrectly.

If you hover the mouse pointer over each file in turn dbpoweramp will display the tags that it has written to each file. There probably won’t be that much info as wav files do not support tags natively.

To fully support tags could you rip to an alternative codec such as flac?

You will need a codec that is compatibly with your intended streaming system otherwise the files may simply not work.

However, don’t forget that dbpoweramp can covert your files between different codec’s, providing you rip to a lossless codec in the first place; this will ensure that no information is lost.

Forgot to say that you should be able to right click on a file and select ‘Edit Tag’ or something similar. This enables you to Add, or Alter tags to your hearts content. You can also select all the tags at once to add or change a field that is common to all files.

I WOULD NOT suggest you alter the tags of WAV files for the reason already stated.

It might be worth your while ripping one of your cd’s or even a single track to flac or whatever else you choose to see the difference in the tags written by default.

Thanks Peter, that's cleared thing up. I think I'll choose a streamer befor I rip any more CD's.

I ripped a CD to WAV, then to FLAC, the tag information appears identical with regards to artist/album information.

fatcat,

I think you are VERY sensible to decide on the streaming solution you are going to be using.

You can then have a close look at how the files present within the software, and decide what naming standards you want to adopt.

I have used a few rippers over the last couple of years, and have not been consistent.

I am now reorgansing my tags, to help me find my music easily.

One of the FEW joys of the process is that I am finding all the fillers that litter my classical CDs, and making them easily available - lots of 'bits' I didn't conciously realise I had.

There have been previous threads on the genre conventions different people use.

Good idea fatcat. You need to see how your streamer server of choice actually handles the files.

Good luck

Peter

Edited to correct silly mistake.

Thanks M and Peter.

So. The tags are used by the streamer software to organise/locate files. Doesn't sound as simple as plug and play.

Hello fatcat

Mmmm no sorry. That’s me misleading you.

It’s the server that uses the tags to organise the list it sends to the renderer/streamer/control point whichever you will use to select your music.

Sorry again for the confusion.

Peter

I will see if I can edit my previous post.

Tagging with UPnP can be a bothersome business. Even with Bliss to help and of course Linux doesn't really like gaps so I've learnt to use underscore. Tog
