Upgrade to stream audio and liquid music. What to buy instead of Naim CD5XS?
Posted by: William101 on 30 June 2015
I have a CD5XS, to SUPERNAIT 2, Powerlines, XPS, Naim DAC.
I would upgrade the CD player with a liquid CD5XS player.
What I must to buy Naim? HDX-SSD? The Naim HDX-SSD need external Nas?
If not I must to buy external NAS? Naim or other brand?
If I want to listen to Internet radio services like Spotify (stream audio) or what should I buy Naim?
I would like something like Naim HDX to listen stored cd but I would also listen the music files from high-quality Internet services.
What should I buy?
Or I just need a good external NAS to connect to my Naim DAC and not sell the CD5XS ?
Sounds like you want an NDX and nas drive. The NDX would sound great withyour supernait 2. A synology nas with two western digital red 2tb hard drives can be bought for around £300. If the new price of the NDX is beyond your budget then you could consider buying used as there are plenty around. The NDX is a great sounding streamer.
I saw that the HDX has the ability to view the tracks on the built-in display.
NDX can do this? You can do this by connecting an external monitor?
NDX can rip CD as HDX ?
For the money you'd spend on an HDX get a UnitiServe and an NDX in stead. Much more flexibility in terms of streaming capabilities, much better app for control and because you can put the UnitiServe away in a different room, much less mechanical noise in your listening room.
The NDX only has a small Black display with Green letters so no cover art. Once you start using the app you won't miss having a colour touch screen one bit. I doubt anyone with an HDX actually uses the touch screen on a daily basis.
So Mac Mini but with such software?
What cables?
The Mac Mini's internal hard disk will retain the CDs ripped?
Or are you need an external hard drive?
I am sorry man but some of your questions are so basic, it's hard to believe you are for real.
Troll me thinks or brain dead?
Have a look on the Naim website and read their product descriptions, use the forum search function, educate yourself!
Next you'll be asking whether you should take a dump and what time is best.
Sorry, if I offended you.
Good luck!
A tad harsh TP. I can see that the OP may be confused with so many options available and not a lot of info on the Naim website as to how to get started.
As well as TP's more well meaning advice above, i'd have a scan of the Linn website in the Network players section which gives some useful guidance on getting started in streaming and network music.

If you can't be helpful, why bother replying to a thread.......
Start simple with an Apple TV into the Ndac. I run that and stream both from a Synology nas and Spotify from ipad via airplay. To me the sound is fantastic.

Agreed.
To the OP: lots of information available including some good suggestions in this thread. If you begin to zero in on one or two specific options which appeal to you, I'm sure you'll get some good advice.

I was being helpful, I suggested he should read the product descriptions provided by Naim on their website and use the search function on this forum. A bit like helping a little baby to walk on his own. Or are you saying parents doing that are not helping their children?
It doesn't always need to be cosy around here, especially not when people ask the most basic questions, like whether an NDX can rip CDs or whether an HDX-SSD requires a NAS, suggesting they have not bothered to invest any of their own time to find out these simple answers.
There seems to be a tendency among some folks to think: "Hey, I got a question, let's ask the good chaps on the Naim forum, that's much quicker than me having to look for the answer myself."
Years back it wasn't like that so much. Or am I reminiscing?
Cor. I'm getting that warm, fuzzy, "I'm back in 2003" feeling.
Oh, sorry, wrong forum.
If you buy the Apple TV, you should also but an optical TOS-Link cable and connect to a digital input. Then you can explore the main internet services like radio and streaming-on-demand. That's great fun and quite satisfying sound to get going.
If you also buy a NAS, and most jump straight to a high quality brand like Synology or QNAP, then you can begin ripping your CD collection and play that using your iDevice or Android as the remote control (there are lots of apps to do this and that is also a fun and educational journey).
These investments will not go wrong, even if you end up with a more sophisticated streamer, or if you trade in some of your gear and re-invent your entire system. A small easy start is a great way to begin. Best wishes!

Perhaps its you getting old and crotchety.
Perhaps its you getting old and crotchety.
I am 44 years old, some grey hair already I have to admit but crotchety not yet. A little blunt maybe.
Nothing wrong with being blunt sometime, but 44 is ancient ...
Young at heart! It's all that matters!
Very true, ( and I'm older than you }
You have to admit that the information Naim on their site are not exceptionally clear about digital media players.
What better place if not the Naim forum to ask for clarification?
Is a wrong to be ignorant on the subject?
Macbook Pro with a USB to SPDIF (M2Tech) and software Audirvana, all connected via BNC cable to my Naim DAC will give a sound comparable or equal to Naim HDX?
I should connect to the Naim DAC MacPro book via USB or via BNC (with interface)?
I would put all my collections of about 1000 cd internal hard disk from 500GB converted to WAV.
Or I'll have to buy HDX and other hardware to use Spotify from the network?
You'd be better off with a dedicated Mac Mini.
I have heard that the application "Remote" to control the Mac Mini remotely with Iphone/Ipad does not go very well. It 's true?
