it's not always about sq!

The sun is shining and I'm sat in the garden with the family drinking Bacardi and listening to Bob Jovi blasting from the conservatory on a twenty year old B&O Century and it's jolly enjoyable despite the lack of sound quality

Indeed in the first place it's about the music itself. However a good system makes more music accessible.

I agree Bert but sometimes a car radio will do the job if the music, the company and the mood are right

Absolutely it has to be the music first.

Some of my albums go back to being played on "Dansette" type players and then SP 25 combos and on and on, no way was all the info getting out but they were no less enjoyable back then.

I'd be interested in knowing how many forum members stand out musical moment was in front of a top end system. Mine was with my dads fold down record player

Most of my stand out musical moments were in front of a live band, very rarely accompanied with good sound quality.  But the sounds and atmosphere were brilliant, if that's not a contradiction of terms!

My stand out musical moments were in my youth.  It was all in the music, at the time I never considered the system, it was the melody, the singing (if any), the style, the guitars and the solos and riffs that caught my attention.  I remember hearing 'River Deep and Mountain High' for the first time, my hair stood up on the back of my neck and I felt a physical experience nearly like an orgasm.  Now can a system including the Statement produce the same effect for me, I very much doubt it.  I will most probably love the sound ( for something over £155,000.00 the sound should be excellent) but not get the same hit as I did all those years ago.

The system I had in my youth was a Nad Receiver, Rega RP1 turntable (Reel to Reel recorder) and bookshelf speakers.  To be honest when I recall all my favorite songs/music I never think about what system was involved when I heard the musical piece for the first time.  HiFi hobby is a strange obsession which predominantly attracts males, reminds me of the heavy rock scene which too predominantly attracts male.

For me, it was Joy Division in the Bangor University refec, followed by The Smiths at Leicester Poly, and more recently the Hilliard Emsemble with Jan Garbarek in Chichester Cathedral. No stereo can come close to the real thing.

Couldn't agree more. FM stereo in my car (both are old and relatively cheap) is often my inspiration for what I listen to when I get home.

Yeah. Same here.

I shall be driving around the Mendips this morning, thoroughly enjoying the crappy in car system. Later this afternoon the Muso will be playing some background albums while I do some work on the PC in my dffice. This evening I'll sit on the sofa and instead of watching a film or reading a book I'll be immersed in the performance of a good HiFi system. There are many ways of getting enjoyment out of music.
