Tour de France

I am really looking forward to this years Tour de France. The race seems to be exciting with quite a number of contenders and a difficult race. So let's hope doping does become an active part of the discussions...... and let's hope we can just enjoy sports

Yes indeed, it has the hallmark of a classic tour, if all the major plays reach the mountains safely. I think Team Sky  and Chris are looking strong and will be among the favourites.

has not started yet and we already have two threads!

...and sadly one Astana rider already suspended. I thought they were in the last chance saloon-or lucky to be competing depending how you look at it.

Not suspended. It's more complex than that, but yes the sport would be much better off if Vino and Astana would just crawl back under the rock from which they came.

Whilstever there is a place for cheats in sport, there will be cheats in sport. The UCI needs to give itself greater powers to deal with this. Not easy, though.

Great first day, interesting results for the candidates for the overall victory.

I can't see where you're coming from at all. Low cortisol level indicated he may suffering from an illness.

With regards to UCI, do they really need MORE power.

Astana Pro Team asked the UCI to allow a replacement rider in place of Boom, and received confirmation from the UCI that as a low cortisol result is no risk to the health of the rider, therefore there are no valid grounds for a late substitution.
It's quite clear, Astana tried to do the right thing, but where thwarted by the UCI.

Astana were dodgy from day one with the Liberty Seguros  connections.  I'll be glad to see this link to the dark days dismissed from Le Tour.

Now who's being naive? The cortisol controversy is just the icing on the cake. A team run by an unrepentant convicted drug cheat has a long and recent pattern of violations. That's enough for me. Get rid of them. There should be no second chances for convicted cheats. They can go and get a real job as far away from cycling as is possible. Any clean riders in Astana can line up for spots on other teams.

LOL.

In the other Tour De France thread you said you hoped Contador came out on top. Obviously you don't realise his right hand man was accused by the UCI (yes them again) of biological passport manipulation. His left hand man served a 2 year ban and has admitted blood doping.

I'm not being naive, just commenting based on fact not prejudice.

The doping is sad, and kills these type of sports events. Still think about this Italian guy who was really killing the others and I really liked it, then he turned out doing this with doping, I think his name was something like Riccardo Ricco......

hate it, would live to have the sport clean again, or perhaps it has never been ......

That sort of thing doesn't seem to happen any more, climbers accelerating away from the bunch on a mountain top finish and winning by minutes. I've noticed climbers sprinting away from the bunch, don't get very far, pay the price for their exertions and end up back in the bunch or behind the bunch. I'm taking this as an indication they're not on drugs.

I still believe some of them use stuff, Froome is one of the guys I suspect.....

Some typical Dutch weather - I hope it will make this day more suspense than just a mass sprint.

Flat stage, yawn...or rather not.. Qunitana and Nibali battling for their race chances in the rain.

Exciting stage today. Would have expected the Dutch to be more in the front, but Contador and Froome have been smarter today.....
