Does Synology DS 214+ UPnP server support DSD files?
Posted by: jwilkinsjr on 05 July 2015
Downloaded 4.3 firmware update successfully on NDS, SU, and NDX. NDS and SU are connected to Certon NAS and server and play the DSD files flawlessly (and sound awesome!). The NDX is connected to Synology D214+ and UnitiServe SSD and will not play the DSD files. Hence the question above, does the Synology DS 214+ UPnP server support DSD files? Thanks!

On my Nd5xs via Synology DS 213+, it's ok
Why not on your Syno DS 214+ ???
But only DSD64
Which prompts an elephant in the room type question I've been meaning to post on:
What are the plans for the uServe family to support DSD? And could Christmas come several years late and the uServe finally support the Album Artists tag with this update.
If the answer to the earlier is no plans or such like then I guess it refers a product marked for disinvest. If its yes to both then i'm off to a dealer to place a £40k upgrade order i've stalled on.
So far no comment from Naim I think, rjfk.
For me the fact that US doesnt handle DSD isnt much of a problem as I have so few of them, there are so few available out there anyway, but also because my NAS that I use for backing up and storing my downloads (its the old 1TB version of US that I have) has a UPnP server that does serve DSD to my NDX.
Is this not something you are able to do maybe if DSD is a big issue for you?
What do you mean by the US supporting the Album Artists tag?
Im not sure I have any issues with the way Album Artists are presented from the US so am just curious.
+1 DS214 has the Synology Media Server loaded in the Package Centre, just install that, it's a few clicks & your done.

That, of course, raises the obvious issue (again) that if the US neither stores nor serves music, all it can do is RIP. Some might say that makes it pretty US. I'm too lazy to get rid of mine, though.
Hi ChrisH,
Agree re having so few DSD files but im not likely to buy many until the uServe situation has settled. Whilst my NAS could run a server part of the reason for my purchase and keeping the uServe was to have a turnkey solution that didnt have me fiddling with IT and software bits.
Re Album Artist, there are two tags that can be used. The artist assigned to a track and an artist assigned to the album. This is most noticable with compilations where the album artist can be set to something like "Various Artists" but it also presents on quite a bit of other music where there is guest artist joining the main artist. The uServe doesnt look at the Album Artist tag so to keep an albums tracks all together under Artist view the artist for all tracks on an album must be the same.
i have a growing list of albums I've downloaded and have had to amend to present correctly via the uServe.
I understand rjfk.
Naim haven't commented re. DSD support on the US, butI can't imagine it isn't on their radar for a future update.
I also chose the US for being a turnkey solution and it is for me for 99.99% of my files.
Im OK with this small anomaly but I can see why others could be frustrated by it.
The Album Artist tag, I know what you mean now.
I have a workaround that works well for me, not ideal, but it works fine.
Again, I can see how it can bug people that compilations need to be retagged, but to me it's not a big deal and easy enough on the iPad or PC.
Same with most download albums - they all need tagging adjustment whether presenting through my US or directly from my NAS UPnP server.
(in fact I adjust the tagging of every CD I rip via the nServe app for Genre, as well as checking the other items are all presenting correctly, I see that as just good maintenance of my file tags).
Hopefully this issue will be addressed in a future update for you.
And hopefully it won't mean you moving away from Naim because of these two things.
