Mac Desktop app?

Posted by: NRP on 06 July 2015

Hi - just bought my first Naim kit - a uniti 2 - loving it - though i wish id previously ripped my music at higher quality rather then the mix i have...probably going to have to do it all again :-)

Ive been using the apple app on my phone and although i think the UI could be a little better the functionality is great. i havent actually used the remote yet. I was wondering however. sometimes my phone is out of charge - sometimes its not with me when im sat at my iMac in my study where my uniti2 is.

Given that mac apps and iphone apps are essentially the same - they are both written in Xcode and you can copy most of the code that actually controls the device over putting a desktop UI on it - is there any chance of releasing a desktop app? it would be good to be able to control my uniti2 from my desktop.

cheers Neil

The iPhone is fine, but it's so much better with an iPad, especially when searching for albums and iradio stations. Go on, you know you want one.

Or even an inexpensive Android tablet, which will set you back less than £100, if all you need it for is as a system remote.

I use an app called QuteControl. Not perfect but nice to have. I can control the inputs and browse my upnp servers with my unitiqute2.

Slightly convoluted but if you are mostly wanting to select music, if you install BubbleUPnPServer the UnitiQute can be "proxied" as a OpenHome Renderer and then use Linn Kazoo for control.

QuteControl – that WAS a wonderful app at the time the developer dropped out of development. It is/was tailored toward the UnitiQute (READ QUTE) and does not work very well with the additional inputs of other machines in the Uniti or X72 range – a second or third analogue input can't be accessed at all. Wish Naim or any other third party would develop this … would easily open my wallet... ;-)

that's really useful thanks. as naim doesn't mention a mac app - i hadn't looked.

looking on the app store the reviews are mixed - what are your impressions?

If Naim have a iPhone/iPad app as they do - all the hard work is done - the code controlling the devices is the hard bit. Creating a desktop app is a few days UI work at most.

i'd pay for it.

Or run Droid4X on Mac and run Naim app within that

+1 for Qute control. OK, it's basic, and sometimes you have to enter the IP address manually, but in the absence of any other desktop app, it makes life easy when you're on the computer, rather than having to unlock another device. An OS X Naim app would be nice, though.

You can install 'Arc Welder' within google chrome which then allows you to install android apps on your desktop. Works fine.

I use QuteControl with my 172 and it's just fine. For me, it shows the volume number which I find really helpful. I too would like to run the app on my MAC, but having tried to do it as Garyi and others say has proved too much for my limited tech knowledge, so Qute Control is more than acceptable. No issue with inputs.

Well Droid4X worked
