Should I stay or should I go? Apple music or Spotify?

Posted by: Milly on 10 July 2015

After all, finally apple launched a music streaming platform! I mean the one before doesn't count! I think I might gonna give it a try during the 3 months for free, what do you think? Actually I am a convinced Spotify user, but I heard apple music has some artists which Spotify doesn't have.. For example Taylor Swift? What do you think is it worth the money to have two accounts or should I stay with Spotify and purchase the songs which they don't have? What is your opinion about the launch and about "Should I stay or should I go?".

Milly - Let us know how the trial goes...

My money will go to Apple if they eventually roll out lossless streaming and there is a Naim implementation.  Until then I am using Spotify for music discovery - but the sound quality, even at the extreme level, leaves something to be desired.  My guess is that a Tidal implementation is next on the Naim roadmap, so that is likely my next trial stop.

I think after 3 months you will have a pretty good idea which service suits your needs best. I think Apple Music is a bit rough around the edges at the moment, but I'm sure that will be addressed over the coming months.

My only note of caution would be if you are using a Naim streamer. Spotify Connect is supported by Naim Apple Music is not. To date, Apple have only announced support for Apple TV and Sonos beyond iOS devices and Macs. There is some speculation that Apple only agreed to support Sonos because of it's size and it's current support for Beats.

I've been a spotify user since it was free although its usually used now by my son, the sound quality is too poor for me to listen seriously to it.  If there was a lossless alternative at a similar price I would move but certainly not to Apple and epecially if it means using Itunes.  Given that the Apple offering is as lossy as Spotify I don't really see any point in anyone moving but each to their own

I have got my free trial of Apple Music, but a lot of what I want to play it hasn't got... And I haven't found the search that easy to use either.. luckily I have Qobuz of course, so no great first world hardship, but surprised I was kind of expecting something a little more polished from Apple.

U can give it a try, for 3 months, however I wanted to do it, but it is a little bit tricky! You need the money on your apple account in case you would take it longer than the three months.. For me that's not fair for a trial version!

But in the end fpr sure I wanted to try it! So did I and for me the structure is not clear enough! I like the Spotify library much better! In the end I decided to record some songs from apple music with a stream recorder called Audials Tunebite (Link attached: http://audials.com/en/how_to_r...om/apple_itunes.html) and I stayed with Spotify! For me that is the better option!

I am right now on Qobuz as it offers me mobile streaming of CD quality. I will choose potentially another provider if this type of quality is also offered through Naim, now with Spotify the quality is not good enough in my opinion.

These lossy streaming services are only of interest to me for discovering new music, which I would then seek to buy as CD or lossless download. As such, I prefer the functionality of Spotify over Apple Music. When Naim introduce a lossless version such as Tidal or Qobuz, I may be tempted, but in order to justify the Ripoff Britain pricing these services charge, the quality will have to be top notch. If Tidal, for example, fob us off with upsampled MP3s for a significant proportion of their catalogue, I won't be touching it with a bargepole.
