Bricked after 4.3 update

Posted by: Dingding on 17 July 2015

After updating my other Naim streamers to the new 4.3 software update I have decided to update my unitiqute , everything was updating perfectly up to 40 something % then a message saying update failed ( or words to that effect ) .

I followed the instructions word for word checking all connections retrying time after time but nothing!!!

After a few hours of shutting down the programme and retrying I had to switch it off. Now when i turn on the unit from the back i have no flashing Ethernet lights and the display reads FIRMWARE UPGRADE DO NOT SWITCH OFF.

So is there anything that can be done to get it working again without going back to the factory? And if not do Naim have a fixed cost for such a service ?

Thanks in advance

The fact you powered off your unit may have erased the net parameters, but no risks to try that:

Restart your software updater.

It should detect the unit, but not the IP address... click continue anyway. It may take a min to restart uploading, but may eventually do it...

If not, you have to call Naim customer support.

good luck...

Agree, ensure the device is directly connected to your updater machine by your LAN switch and restart. Make sure the updater doesn't go into some sort of power save or screen save mode.. You should be ok..

Have spent a hour trying to get it to do something , it's looking like the network card is completely inactive. I don't understand why it stopped updating after 40% and why there's not a reset button that can put it back to a latter software version should something go wrong. It was done with a desktop PC using the same hardware that used to update it last time.

Seeing that they sell on EBay for no more that £500 these days it's just not worth repairing. I will probably stick it in the loft for a few years before finally throwing it way.

I'm so frustrated with this type of crude update system, maybe one day everything will be as easy as a muso update, till then I wonder how many small black boxes will be in lofts or holding doors open ??

Worth a mail to Naim support maybe? At least you Will have the chance to vent yiur understandable frustration of them directly!

I wonder whether your Qute was at the right firmware level before you started 4.3? Anyway I am sure that if you ring Naim support, which is a far more straightforward and enlightening process than telephone support lines are usually, then they will be able to email you an update file which will put you back where you need to be to do the 4.3 update again.

in another thread Naim have explained recently why the update has to be done this way, which is an interesting read, and also they explained that there is always a way to recover from a failed update.

Good luck and don't give up on your Qute. It deserves better than sitting in your loft!

Due to the crude firmware updating procedure Naim should repair this update failure for free.

How many times have we read reports of people crapping themselves whilst updating these products, for a premium product this should not be the case.

Have a word with your dealer.  I'm sure they would be happy to sort things out, otherwise call Naim's customer service.

Just a quick update, I decided to give it one last go tonight when I got home from work as it was still all connected up to my PC. After powering it all up the same message appeared on the Qute and still no lights above the Ethernet socket.

However the streamer update software located the unit first time and started updating the latest software. Only after it finished did the unit restart and the Ethernet lights start flashing.

Now everything is working as normal, I have no idea why it didn`t do it the other day as I didn`t have any background processes running or any auto updates switched on.

I can only imagine there was a blip with the download from the server ?  I was an early adopter of Naim streamers and servers and have always been able to update each unit over the years but this was a new problem to me and wanted to give the heads up to anyone else that has gone throw the same problem.

Good to hear you have it back working.

Glad it's all sorted.  I think I've read of maybe ONE Naim streamer that was truly "bricked" by updating.  A little stall and restart . . . while not optimal . . . is nothing to worry about.  The streamers really are pretty robust and truly HARD to "brick" by routine updating.

I agree with Bart, the streamers are robust. Given the tens of thousands of streamers out there, we only ever hear of a tiny handful of issues.. and even then I can't ever remember reading an issue that didn't clear itself by the owner or dealer..

Glad you got it working.

I did something wrong during some update of my NDS a few months ago and was horrified that the update halted mid-way.  Seeing "update completed" after restarting was quite satisfying.
