DSD playback question

Posted by: Niko08 on 19 July 2015

Updated NDX to 4.3, downloaded a DSD file, David Elias to my Synology NAS drive. Track appears ok in Nstream and appears in NDX window when selected. However, nothing being played through system, am I missing something?

I see you have a Naim DAC.  Are you using the NDX to feed. the DAC?
If so, perhaps this is the issue as I have seen nothing to suggest the DAC can playback DSD files.
You might want to try bypassing the DAC and see if this works.

It's probably because your UPnP software on the NAS doesn't serve DSD files. I use Asset and that doesn't yet althouh I understand it's coming.

Easiest way is to put the DSD files on a stick.

Synology serves DSD with both Syn's own  Media Server & Minimserver

I have NDX + Synology & DSD plays perfectly

The problem is with the nDAC

Indeed, to play DSD you will need to use the NDX's internal DAC, or have the NDX send the DoP via SPDIF to a DSD capable DAC, the standalone Naim DAC does not currently support DSD

In addition to the above, you need to make sure it's DSD 64, Naim streamers don't support all DSD rates.

Regarding assett upnp I have loaded DSD 64 files into my folder on my Qnap with QNAP assett (latest version) but they do not appear on nstream. According to illustrates specs.for assett it does support DSD64 DFF FILES.  Anyone any further knowledge on this.

Yes, Asset UPnP does support both dsf and dff dsd files but only in its latest R5 release which currently is available only to run on a windows PC i.e. It won't yet be available to run on your QNAP NAS. I believe that  Version 4.5 is the latest version for QNAP. If you have a PC you can install and run Asset R5 on your PC to play/stream the files in your QNAP's music directory.

Also, I would recommend using the dsf format over dff as dsf supports tagging whereas dff files do not. Asset UPnP uses tags to display your files in nstream so you may need to browse via folder view in order to see your dff files.

BTW I assume that you are using the latest naim app rather than the old nstream app.

Thank you sjbabbey for your reply. It answers fully my query regarding assett qnap. I am using the latest version, also the latest software on my NDX which does play DSD via USB. Hopefully the next version of Assett Qnap will support DSD. I will also take note of your information regarding files.
