PONO downloads

Posted by: intothevoid on 21 July 2015

Does anyone know if downloads bought through the Pono website can be stored on a NAS for playback through a standard hifi, or is it a completely closed system?

I can't find any info on the Pono website (not that surprising) and so wondered if anyone has tried.

Prices are good for hi-res material compared to all the usual suspects.

Thanks, Steve

Hi intothevoid and sorry if this has been asked but how have you bought Pono downloads if UK based do they still require US cards/details or has anyone got this sorted yet?

Always good to have many purchase options.

Thanks, and apologies to go off your main thread for this question.

Hi Dan, no that's why I was asking before taking the plunge myself.

Someone here might have tried Pono?

This wasn't clear to me when i looked at the Pono player recently to replace my trusty iPod. The PonoMusic world app seems to handle all the music files, whether it's local files you already have or downloading music from the store. It never mentions storage in the system requirements for the software so i'd assumed it didn't store the downloaded music locally (apart from in the SD cards in the player). The files are standard Flac files so should be able to be copied off and stored elsewhere for playback in the main system. I'll be interested to hear what you think if you buy one

This is a true statement.  The files are FLAC packaged PCM. You should have no issues with playback on a Naim system.  I have several albums purchased from the Pono store on my NAS.

Hi Mark, where are you based? I tried to purchase off the Pono site last night and at the point of checking out the only billing country on offer was USA. I live in Aus so had to pullout.

I'm in the US.  You guys want access to PONO and I want access to Qobuz...

Speaking of the PONO, what the hell is up with its form factor?!

"Is that a Toblerone bar in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

I mean, could it possibly be any less pocketable?!

Probably the one main thing holding me back from pulling the trigger.  My primary listening to a portable player is while walking/running, etc.  It seems like someone missed the design brief about "portability".  I'll just listen to my Naim streamer - it is just about as portable and easy to get into my pocket for on the go.

That's what I wanted to hear, thanks James.

I have no intention of buying a Pono device, and wanted to ensure that Pono can be used like any other web store and not be tied exclusively to the hardware.

Just pointing the credit Marks way as he confirmed he'd stored the downloads to his NAS
