Naim NDS not working after power cut

Posted by: Dungassin on 23 July 2015

Well, we had one of hour (all too frequent IMO) short lived power cuts this morning.  Following this, as sometimes happens, I had to reboot the routed (Netgear N600) and reconnect the wifi extender (also Netgear) using the router setup software.   This time the power cut also managed to switch off my QNAP NAS (where I keep the music files and nothing else).  I have Asset installed on that device as my server.

Got my iPad back up and reconnected, but NDS just says 'No Device. Connect USB/iPod'.  Switched the 555PS off/on ... same message.

The NDS is connected via a Netgear switch, so I tried running a separate ethernet cable to the NDS.  Still no joy.  Tried switch with other devices.  The switch is working OK.   Added a few music files to my WD My Cloud device and made sure it's DLNA server was switched on.   Still got same message from NDS.

The only thing I haven't tried is to go into the QNAP setup and make sure that Asset or Twonky are still there and working.

So it looks like the NDS may be winging its way back to Naim for some TLC.

Can your iPad see your NDS? Or does it not find it on this discovery screen? If the iPad finds it it looks like the Ethernet interface is up, and if so you might want to check your UPnP media server (twonky) is running correctly.

iPad gives me the same 'No Device. Connect USB/iPod' message on its screen, so I assume it can apparently 'see' the NDS as it's name appears on the iPad screen.

Since my original post I've been into the the QNAP setup software, and switched Asset off and back on again, and also switched Twonky on (I had disabled it some time ago).  Still no joy.   Also been up in the loft for an ethernet cable, and connected up my Oppo 103 to my network.  I can play music files from my NAS using that, but I'm not sure that it is actually using a server as such, as the search/find doing it from the Oppo is pretty abysmal.

My NDS has always been a bit flaky, requiring power off/on about once a week when it says IIRC 'No Server' and power off/on seems to cure that.  However, I have never seen this 'No Device. Connect USB/iPod' message before today.

Before you suggest it, I do have a fixed IP address for the NDS and the iPad.

As an addendum, I've downloaded the trial Mac version of Asset and installed it to see if it was just a problem with the QNAP NAS.  Alas, no change in symptoms.

If those are the only two with fixed IP addresses, there's the possibility your router has allocated a duplicate address to your NDS.

Switch EVERYTHING off. switch on your router & allow to stabilise (couple of mins).

Switch on the NDS&  allow to stabilise.

Switch on the ipad.

Then see if the NDS can play internet radio?

Switch on other devices one by one (including your phone(s) )

Pour a large glass of your favourite tipple & see if music plays.

IF NOT, your NDS may be buggered.

Thanks, but I've solved the problem after trying a Factory Reset which didn't cure it.

Then ...

Looked very closely at the error message screen on the NDS itself, and realised it the input had somehow changed to USB!

The power cut must have triggered that change.  Went through the input menu and changed it back to UPNP.  Problem solved.

Perhaps I should have RTFM a little more closely ...

Now if only our local power station could stop having power cuts ...

Now I'm going to have to try to figure out why my Mac always has problems logging on to my NAS drives, even though the passwords are in the Keychain.  It always says it has a problem but logs on (eventually) anyway.  Perhaps I should go and set these up again and fix their IP addresses?  I have noticed that if I try to use the link to go to the webpage for my WD My Cloud device (bought as replacement for my Buffalo which died), it says 'Safari can't find the server' and gives the IP address it is trying to log onto.  However, when I checked the 'attached devices' on the Router webpage, the WD device now seems to have a different IP address.   (sigh)

I literally was reading this thread, got to the message about no device and thought "It's switched on an unused input" but you got there.

As an aside I would not fix IP addresses, I have regular power cuts, 3 streamers and a WD NAS, but nothing ever misses a beat, fixed IPs never solved my crap router issue! If you haven't got a Belkin surge protector for NAS switch router phone line etc I would seriously get out and buy one. All the overhead power cables in our village are being dug in, plus fibreoptic comms so it's up and down all the time. Occasionally I flush the UPNP cache on the app if an odd album cover appears...

A power cut at home always changes the input on my SN2 to AUX or something . . . something different than the HDD input I use for my NDS.

Happy for you...I hate reading the threads on here where a many-thousand dollar piece of electronics is trashed.
