Going From a MacBook Pro Based Server to a NAS Based Server

Posted by: thirty three and a third on 26 July 2015

Currently, I have most, but not all of my CDs ripped to a MacBook Pro using iTunes (obviously) at AIFF. I'd like to ditch the MacBook Pro and transfer all of music to a server (Synology BeyondCloud Mirror 2-Bay) and just use the Naim App for control.

Oh yeah, and we're talking a SuperUniti running all of this.

Let's pretend that I'm really stupid. Now how should I go about doing this so it will work?

The first stage is to copy the music files to the nas.

Mount the nas it should be visable in the finder side bar under shared.

Create a folder on it called music and copy the specific music files/folders from itunes (not the whole itunes folder) to this. Depending on how much you have it could take a while.

Turn on what ever UPNP software is on the nas and point it to that music.

After it has scanned it will appear on the naim app.

Sounds good, but I'm still not sure. Am I going into the Finder to grab these files or just clicking and dragging the files off of iTunes?

Would love to show you a screen grab of what I'm talking about, but this message board doesn't play nice with Flickr or Google Photos.

On the mac in finder goto go and 'go to folder.' type ~/music then itunes/itunes media/music

They should be resonably organised and those are the folders to wack on your nas in a folder called music (it might have one pre configured)

In addition to the what Gary has said, You may need to do a bit of tidying up as you may find artwork missing, albums missing depending on how iTunes has organised things. I've just converted my whole iTunes library from AIFF to ALAC and took the opportunity to sort out tags (adding album artist, removing incorrect compilation tags etc) making sure artwork was correct and embedded. A ball ache of a job but worth doing to make sure other media  servers can read your library correctly.

I recommend BLISS for this. I use it straight off my windows based server for keeping things all purdy.

Very neat - looks a useful bit of software.

The NAS is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'll let you know the results!

Thanks!

I've had a Synology NAS for a few months now and think it's wonderful. I used the included Media Server software which has worked very well for me, although some prefer MinimServer (also now included). For tagging (SO important) I bought Metadatics from the iTunes store. All works well with my MacBook Pro and ND5 XS.

I use buffalo link station nas drives as they have iTunes server built in.

the simple way to do it is to move your whole iTunes library media folder to the nas.

if using Ethernet connections rather than wireless go for cat6 or cat 7 cables

my whole iTunes media is stored on a link station 420 6tb set to mirror the files for backup and also backs up to a link station 410 2tb for extra security, a further 410 2tb nas serves as a backup for any flac files I need to convert to alac for iTunes and as my time machine drive.

all drives and the MBP are connected via cat 6 or 7 cables to my router, the nas's via a network switch.

all drives are in another room to the system to minimise noise etc.

once set up its really easy to manage your media on an external nas via iTunes, the main thing is to make sure you mount the nas drive each time you turn the computer/laptop on, if you don't any tracks or albuMs added will go in the old iTunes media folder in " music".

This Synology server is super easy to work with that even an idiot like me can use it. Essentially click and drag the iTunes music folders over to the server (after cleaning up a few things). The SuperUniti recognizes and plays them easy-peasy. Been using the Linn Kinsky on my desktop and on my iPhone to control everything. Naim needs to step it up in the app/desktop department.

Thank you for all of your help.

Well I'll say this, you have unusual taste if you think kinsky is better!

Good to hear it all worked out well. Enjoy
