The TV commercial makes me laugh, 'all these children will grow up with Window 10'.

How long before Windows 11, 18 months?

They've said it will be the last version; so what after this...?

1  a subscription service?

2  incremental updates?

3  changing the name away from Windows?

4  periodic updates but still called Windows 10 - Windows 10.1, 10.2, ... (after all Apple did it first and Steve Ballmer seems to be a "Me Too" sort of guy)?

Well, "so what!"

Talking to an IT buddy who claims to have insider contacts,  that's the way its planned .....

Every PC will upgrade & have Win-10 (the pre Win-7 machines most likely won't have enough memory & processor speed) & the Win-10 OS updates/upgrades come down the pipe without any input from the user (assuming you've set your PC up correctly)

Getting back to Mrs-Mike's ......... they removed everything, re-formated, reloaded & installed Win-10.   Amazed by the newfound speed & wifi connectivity, ditto the features & flexibility of Win-10.  Its been play time since yesterday,  I might have to assume domestic engineering duties me-self.

It's somewhat ironic that the founder of the modern PC business IBM will be adding another 200k Macbooks to the already ordered 50k, and in the process become an almost exclusively Mac operation.

But look where then went after that - the PS/2, what a success that was!    IBM is no longer the market leader that it once was.

Actually, in terms of high end notebooks, Apple does currently have a significant advantage.  However for desktops, basic notebooks, virtualised machines and small servers, the situation is very different.  I don't think this news will trouble Microsoft.

I agree, the desktop/notebook market is in terminal decline. I think Microsoft is more concerned that in 2012 Android and now in 2015 iOS sales have overtaken combined Windows sales.

Despite some questionable default privacy settings Windows 10 appears to be a solid release. I'll certainly upgrade my virtual machines in the next few months once things have settles down. I'm just not buying in to the kids growing up with Windows message. It appears to me a retread of the 90's Windows everywhere mantra.

Also cheap moves like personalised video adverts in Solitaire just doesn't fill me with confidence. Giving each Windows 10 user a unique advertising ID so they can track you across services is a seriously retrograde step imo.

Further to my previous post. Ars Technica have a good article on how to make your Windows 10 install less creepy.

Microsoft is far less creepy that Google...the world just hasn't woke up to all the things they are up to yet.

Quoted companies are, almost by definition, amoral:  Their prime duty is to provide a profit for their shareholders, everything else is incidental.

The connectivity and network issues have now been flagged. It seems there is a fix but I hope they will get a patch out soon. Meanwhile my clean W7 install is running superbly.

I am not sure what is worse,  the what seems excessive monitoring of your activities by Google, MS et al,  or the paranoid fear of being snooped on by some form of big brother culture.

If it genuinely does help MS make a better OS that will ultimately benefit us all, great, & I for one will be allowing all the snoopy stuff that Win-10 offer for a while yet.  That said I do minimise as much as possible on Google & as much as possible in general with cookies, plus I have AddBlock & Ghostery

Quite good timing for me, my windows 7 laptop is some years old now and despite regular clearances is slowing and a couple of apps have simply decided not to play anymore. I was going to reinstall windows 7 as a refresh. Done W10 instead and all is well again. Works well to my eyes (as someone who is used to 8.1 on desktop already) and seems to be a good balance between 7 and 8, having switched off as much of the BB stuff as I can find.

Upgraded all my PCs in the house to Windows 10 - All went smoothly, look & feel is better IMHO, I like the clean, minimalist GUI, I would not go back to Windows 7.

What is the difference between "Windows 10 Pro" and "Windows 10 Pro N"? (options in the media creation tool)

and my other question is do I use my existing Win7 install key? or do I get a new one?

Windows 10 Pro is the real Mc Coy, Windows 7 N editions are meant to work around the silly law (imposed on MS) in such countries that are part of the European Economic Area, Croatia, and Switzerland.

As far as I recall,  no key is needed if your Window 7 is fully activated.

Chaps

I downloaded Windows 10 a couple of days ago. It took just over an hour and it was so easy a child of six could have done it.

It took me about an hour to work my way around it but after a few days I have to admit that it is an improvement over Windows 7.

Now it all seems nothing of a muchness and no big deal.

Regards

Mick

I've also got Win 10. The only problem I have is that Creative Labs haven't released drivers for my Soundblaster X-Fi Elite Pro. It means I cannot get my headphones to auto-mute the speakers when plugged in....oops

Supposedly they're due for release next month....

Right, always something unexpected comes up, most common issues are with the graphic and audio cards.

My upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 went OK and so far all is working as it should.  Just one irritant though.  There are three users set up on the PC and when powering up, the PC will now just automatically load the main user.  From there, you then have to log on for one of the other two users. This is a slow process and shouldn't be necessary.  There used to be an option on start up to select which user.  I can't find a way of getting to this select user screen in Windows 10 - has anyone found a solution please?

Chris G,

Interesting that you mention a slow process. I've been rather amazed at the shut down and cold reboot speeds of 10. Literally a matter of seconds.

I've still got some minor irritations with my touchpad (had to plug in a mouse for a short period today), and it seems has to do with both 10 and my Asus manufacturer supplying updates. Shutting down and rebooting seems to help, and updates/fixes seem to be rapidly streaming in.

Beyond that, Edge has some vagaries I find when trying to post this forum, mostly associated with use of emoticons or embedding quotes. Maybe I shouldn't be using those in my replies here anyhow

I am an old dinosaur who is happy to carry on with my Windows 7 because it is seems to give all that I require and I am petrified of downloading Windows 10 because I fear something will go wrong.  Why fix it if it is working?

The reason for this fear of downloading comes from having a Cocktail Audio X10 which burns CDs and stores it on the hard drive.  Every so often when I switch the machine on it asks me if I want to upload the latest 'Frimware' and one day I opted for 'yes'. After a while I obtained the new Frimware containing some new bits. But to my utter horror the list of all my ripped Cds has vanished (it was a long list).  From a helpful forum I was told that there must of been a fault when downloading the new frimware. From advice given I uploaded my original frimware and everything came back including most importantly my list of recorded (ripped) cds.  I am now terrified of any new frimware because I do not trust modern technology to get it right when uploading the new frimware.

Can somebody please reassure me that it is safe to upload updated information?

YES - its safe

You will for sure be a real extinct dinosaur in the near future when MS withdraw support for Win-7.

Do a Windows updates (if you haven't got your system set to do so automatically) & load whatever that sends you,  then do a back up - to-be-sure-to-be-sure - & get on with it.

Mine took 40 minutes, others have reported up to 1.5hrs so I guess it depends on the broadband line speed.

Thank you for the above, is it guaranteed that all my saved information will not be effected (disappear) if I do a Windows update?

When you say do a back up, what is the procedure? Does this involve copying everything on to a memory stick?

Thank you
