Unable to get metadata from itunes to qnap NAS

Posted by: Stuart McLay on 03 August 2015

Hello,

Wonder if anyone can help please.

I'm in the process of ripping CDs, first to itunes & then to a Qnap TS-212p NAS.

But no matter what setting I try I am unable to get any album artwork onto the NAS.

Thought I'd try here as I can't find a solution anywhere on the internet.

What precisely do you mean when you say that you "can't get any album artwork onto the nas?"

iTunes rips typically contain the artwork embedded within the file itself.  If you're looking for a folder.jpg type of file . . . you're not going to find one.  You can make your own, however.

But anyway  . . . what exactly are you looking for and not finding??

Thanks for getting back.

When I upload the audio files from my computer to my NAS no album covers appear on the NAS, therefore no album covers are shown on the Naim app either.

But the album covers are fine on itunes.

"No album covers appear on the nas."

WHERE on the nas?  I still don't know exactly what you're looking for, and where.

In the Music Station which shows the music I've uploaded.

Appreciate you trying to help.

I believe that the Music Station app (I assume this is a QNAP nas?) on the nas does not look for / see embedded album art.  It will look for a separate jpg file, in the same directory as the album's music files, named folder.jpg.  Conversely, iTunes embeds the album art and does not create a separate jpg file.  That's why you cant see them in the Music Station app on the nas.

Next question -- how are you trying to serve the music?  Music Station is not a UPnP server that will serve music to a Naim player.  For that you need to use the QNAP Media Server or better yet, a third-party server such as Asset or Minimserver.  Those may well deal with the embedded album art, and not require a more laborious fix.

Yes your thread title made it clear it's a QNAP nas.

Do check if you're trying to use Music Station, when you should be using Media Server.

As Bart says, iTunes embeds the artwork into the datafile for each track.  The I believe Naim app should display the artwork from the tracks in the display for the current playlist.

However if you are wanting the artwork to display for the album view, you need to have artwork for the whole album not just an image embedded in each individual track.  This requires folder.jpg or cover.jpg files.

Assuming you are using a UPnP server, it sounds like it's doing exactly what you've told it to..

I have a Synology NAS, but there's a similar problem when moving music from iTunes to the NAS, which I solved with the "Export for iTunes" app, which can be set to extract the cover art as a separate JPEG in the album folder, which is what you need.

To avoid potential confusion, iTunes stores album art in two different places, depending on the source of the file. If the file is bought and downloaded by iTunes, the album art is stored in a seperate database within iTunes and not stored in the media file itself. If the file is ripped or imported into iTunes, and the format is not WAV, then iTunes stores the album art in the media file itself.
