Difference between Superuniti and Qute2 + NAP100

Posted by: Paristhea on 03 August 2015

I am considering upgrading from my current Qute2 + NAP100 to the Superuniti.

Speakers are Linn Majik 109, stand mounted.

Would anyone be able to provide me with a descriptive explanation on the expected differences and if it is worth going for this upgrade?  Would i also need to change the speakers if i did upgrade the source?

Regards,

My wife would kill me if I would buy a SU, but I think I can sneak a NAP-100 in here...

UQ2 + PMC DB1+ speakers sounds great, but I sure miss some OOMPH when I turn up the volume.

I'm wondering if a NAP-100 would give me that oomph, or would I have to buy new speakers as well? Because floor standers are out of the question.

The PMCs are great little nearfield monitors and are wonderful for 'seeing into' the mix, but whatever you add to them you will never get oomph that pins you in your chair. My Focal Chorus 806W SE speakers let the sound out and are suprisingly fulsome on a bare qute, without things getting too muddled, they're great vfm. IMO big amp, small speakers = small sound, ya cannae change the lawsa physics, cap'n.

Check my profile for the kit and a pic in situ.

For sure the NAP 100 will add something significant to your Q2.  I don't know your speakers unfortunately and how they perform, nor your room geometry, but bookshelf speakers are none the less bookshelf.  The best i heard with respect to deep bass are the KEF LS50, although the rest of their sound is not my cup of tea.

I would say with certainty that you will not need to change your speakers because of the NAP 100.

I liked my UQ with the NAP100, although I believe others haven't so much. There was some extra power/control and a bit of extra depth - it seemed to remove a veil from the UQ. I also tried bi-amping, but wouldn't recommend. The best option to my ears was to switch off the UQ power amp and just use the NAP100.

You don't need new speakers; the PMCs are great. I prefer them to most bass reflex types, and certainly prefer them to the LS50s which had bass that, to me, always sounded the same.

How do u switch off the power amp of the Q2, is it the setting "no speakers" in the setup menu?

If you have the chance to get a NAP100 i say go for it . I just love my set-up which is pretty much identical to yours except I have the NAP100 and DB1i's. To me it just has a warm and effortless sound that plays beautifully no matter what type of music you throw at it. Okay you don't get really kick ass bass, but then with stand mounts your not likely to. This is my first foray into Naim and I couldn't be happier. Also, all my kit is second hand or ex-demo which is not something I thought I would ever end up doing. I have recently added a used Rega Apollo R CD player as well and this also sounds wonderful through this little system, perhaps you can sneak one of these in as well
