Transcoding Gapless with Synology UPnP "Media Server"

Posted by: Mike-B on 10 August 2015

We have a string of reports on this problem over the years & Synology don't seem to be aware.

I've taken it on & reported it to Synology on their Support Report.

If/when it gets accepted & I get feedback I will post it - or any links

Mike,

Yes, I stopped using transcoding and converted all the files to wave format due to the 24bit>16bit issue and lack of gapless playback.  When both are fixed (I haven't tested the 24bit>16bit recently, it was still truncating last time I tried it), I'll reconsider.

Unfortunately I believe they think we're a small minority group who want to use transcoding as a general thing, rather than just to convert the odd thing that comes in the wrong format, and I feel they're unlikely to consider gapless transcoding a priority issue.  I admire your optimism!

I'm a perpetual optimist Huge,  any glass that is half full does not meet its design intent in my world,   i.e. do it again until its right.

I've been WAV since my early NAS experiments so transcoding issues has never been a problem for me personally.  But its time someone took it on,  I picked up a same report on another forum last week,  so why not contact Synology ..........  moaning won't fix'um.

I did a bit of digging over the weekend & although not specific to audio, downsampling & no gapless seem to be linked.     Anyhow,  fingers crossed ...........

Optimist: the glass is half full.

Pessimist: the glass is half empty.

Engineer: the glass is twice as big as it needs to be*.

* Actually only 1.3333 times as big as it needs to be to allow a 50% safety margin.

An incorrectly sized glass indicates you are not committed to creating the perfect solution

Mike, you really should try Minim, it's so much better.

Agreed, HH. I've been transcoding FLAC to WAV on the fly with Minimserver for some time now and it's never skipped a beat.

I have HH,. I loaded Minim around a year ago just to see what the diff was.  Its still loaded,   I used both side by side for about 2 or 3 months.  Maybe I should give the Synology OS & CPU some space & uninstall it.

I can't agree its so much better as to me both perform the same (+/-/~/=)     I know my NAS albums, artists & whatever inside out (i.e. I don't need to "search" as such,  I just prefer the simpler fuss free Synology.  Plus - I am all WAV & don't have need to transcode & Media Server running straight WAV plays gapless perfectly & does not downsample,

Synology have posted me a Support Ticket #

I got the same when I logged the DSM 5.1 hibernation issue & that got fixed pretty quick,  so fingers still crossed,  but not holding my breath.

Thank you Mike, great help if will be fixed, it should be not so difficult for the developing team in Sinology, I guess.

I must anyway confess that Minim is very nice, I use it since then, you know.

I've received  reply from Synology  ...............

Unfortunately FLAC files when transcoded cannot be played gaplessly over DLNA; this is how transcoding works via Media Server in this instance.

.......   errr ........  I think we all know this already !!!

I have forwarded your request for this added feature to our development team for consideration as a future enhancement. Unfortunately it isn't possible to provide a Timescale as to when this may be included  ................

I replied thanking them etc & pointed out that ALL other DNLA/UPnP media servers do transcode & play gapless,  & thanked them for putting it forward for future possible changes.

Thanks for fighting the good fight, Mike.

Thank you anyway Mike. Let's stay with Minim so far.

Happy holidays.

na-na .......  lets stay with WAV & Synology Media Server

- so much more civilised .........  & perfect gapless replay

I'm now working on Synology hibernation waking every 30 minutes,  I believe its something pinging the Synology from outside & I'm focusing on my PC & its new Win-10.   But that's now a Monday job as I'm away for the weekend.

Ciao

Another vote for WAVE and Synology Media Server - so much simpler and still does the job
