Any one else meteorite watching tonight?

I saw 5 last night within half an hour.

Hoping for clear skies tonight.

Yep, hoping to but the weather forecast isn't good for our part of the world (Suffolk)

Fingers crossed!

Has any one tried to photograph such events?

The recent episode of Sky at Night had some good advice

Well I was out, also in Suffolk, on Monday night and looked north east. It was a good night sky and the milky way was quite visible. I saw quite a few streaking across the northeast sky for a while

If the skies are clear.  We have a fair bit of light pollution where I am but I saw four in around thirty minutes last night

I'm an avid hobby astronomer (nerd'ish nut category)

I saw a few over the weekend,  but unfortunately cloud last night & what looks like the same again tonight,  maybe one or two breaks in a early hours

- shame !!! as tonight is the peak

No chance Thursday with heavy rain+thunder,  the show will be over by Friday.

The best I ever saw was the Leonids (November) when in Mauritius  - sitting on a beach looking at an ink black sky & tens per minute.  Plus the southern star sky which is the best on earth awesome jaw dropping just on its own.

The right sky makes all the difference, we have a family log cabin in Wales where the skies are pretty dark and occasionally I will lug the telescope down there are set it up.  Its a pain because its a big telescope but there is so much more to see than at home.  Even without the scope I can sit for hours there just in awe of the milky way.  Wish I was down there tonight!

In holidays in the mountains (usually good for very limited surround night light) but..

Raining all night!

Next year...

12 meteors, including some really good ones, one hedgehog, on the ground, one cat that scared the crap out of me by jumping out the bushes and a noisy owl.  Not bad for one hour on a slightly misty night in the suburbs. They will be fast and bright later I reckon

Success!  Between 10.30-11.00 last night (Wednesday) saw 7-8, some very bright.  For once the sky was clear.

We had clear skies from around 23:00. Problem was there was a high level trans-boundary haze & we did not get much of a show with the haze obscuring all but the hi-viz ones.  The most spectacular came from the Perseus area to direct overhead & its tail had an exceptionaly long duration.  At that point we both thought we won't better that one & hit the sack

Disappointment for me. Very patchy cloud, just saw 3 but they had nice bright green streaks.

At least they will be back next year!

Chaps

I went out around 1.00am this morning, lying on a sun lounger staring up at the north east sky with a whisky in my hand. I saw just one which took a couple of minutes to fly right across the sky heading due north.

Overall it was a wasted 45 minutes. I did this a few years ago and then the sky was awash with them and that really was something special to watch.

Regards

Mick

Polar orbiting satellite - wrong orbit for the ISS.

Thanks James, I did wonder when I wrote my reply. I really ought to get an app!

Can anyone recommend the best Android app for tracking satellites etc.?

We walked along the Wayfarer's Walk west of Kingsclere between 10:30 and 11:30 and saw a dozen or more, mostly to the North East or East as we were walking back towards Kingsclere mast.

Plus a couple of satelites and plenty of aircraft.

Sky was clear overhead, but haze started to build around the horizon from 10:30 and by 11:30 had begun to obscure about 1/3 of the sky from the horizon upwards. Mrs D saw a couple more whilst I was driving back to Newbury.

Overall worth the effort and interesting, but not spectacular.

If anyone is interested in astrophotography I understand their is an excellent new book in the subject.

Well that is what my brother tells me.

On Amazon, search for Astrophotography Manual and Chris Woodhouse.

Knowing him I warn you it may be very nerdy....

Chaps

Bearing in mind it is the 13th and more to the point, plain bloody cloudy, what are the chances of seeing them tonight and,  if so, what is the best time to do it.

Mick,

I think a raincoat and hope are your best friends for tonight if you are going out.

Better still would be a glass of whiskey and Sarah Brightman on the old Garrard

Hi Don

I may be many things but  I am not that keen.

It was tanking it down with rain, so it was an evening of Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball.

Next year will soon come around.

Regards
