New HDX owner
Posted by: Thorsten_L on 15 August 2015
Hi @all!
I just got my HDX this afternoon and I hooked it up nicely.
Everything looks fine.
Basically I would love to now be able to bring my music files to the HDX.
I can see the 2 folders "downloads" and "music" on the HDX in my Windows 10 explorer.
I put an album in the "downloads" folder in FLAC.
Folder : ACDC
Subfolder: Back in Black
Neither n-serve nor the DTC show me the album...
I am connected to the HDX, but how to bring it to play "Back in Black"?
Please help...
Hi Thorsten,
You did the right thing -- music you bring to the HDX goes in the Downloads folder. How you arrange the folders in Downloads is not critical, but I make a folder for each artist, and then inside those a folder for each album (cd). In each album folder should be the .flac files, and an album art file named folder.jpg
If you've added an album folder to Downloads, you do need to wait for the HDX to actually see it (index it) in order to be able to find it and play it. You could use the Desktop Client to force a re-scan of the Downloads "share." Sometimes it seems that my UnitiServe (1/2 an HDX) rescans itself right away, but not always. I'm not sure what "normal" is but in any event you won't see new music show up until it has rescanned. Otherwise it sounds like you did everything right.
Thank you...but how can I force a rescan in the DTC...where to find the "downloads"-share there???

I don't have my Windows laptop at home so I can't help today. I use all Macs at home -- I could tell you how to do it in n-Serve for OS X if that helps!! n-Serve for iOS does not have this functionality however.
Ok...thank you, Bart...
I can´t figure out how to arrange a re-scan...meaning how to bring the HDX to see my added album...
If you make your way thru the Desktop Client screens . . can you find a reference to Network Shares? (The OS X version has an area called "Maintenance," where this stuff resides.) The Downloads folder is treated as a "share" -- meaning a place that music that has been added by the user can be read from. This distinguishes it from a "Store," which is where the HDX stores rips it makes itself.
If you can find the Downloads share, maybe you can right-click on it and find a scan option? Someone who runs Windows may come along and comment. I haven't used the DTC in well over a year; just Macs now.
This is strange if it is a new unit, since all albums both ripped by the hdx and albums added to download should show up automatically. there is a setting that can change the scan behavior but if it is a new unit this should not have been changed.
Have you tried to rip a cd and see what happens then.
Can you see the folder and the files from windows10 and can you play them?
If you have the destop client running, you can find the list of shares on the tools tab, the last Group called music repositories, then scannable Network shares. Here you can see the shares the hdx can see. Working shares should be marked as being online, and you can change how a share is scanned by using the "set scan type" button.
I suppose you have looked at the touch screen also? I have not managed to install win10 yet, but there may possibly be a problem with the desktop client under win10.
Metadata problem? Or special characters in the filename?
It was not a new HDX, but from March 15.
I can see the "scannable network shares", but none of them is online...not even my own...which worked flawlessly with my ND5XS...
What is the name for the HDX´s own "downloads" - folder share???
Yes...I can access the disk on the HDX and I can play the files in Windows.
How can I change the scan-behaviour so that they automatically show up?
On the touch screen, I can see that my shared "Music"-folder on the PC is activated, but OFFLINE and there is a red dot next to it...first an orange one and then it turns red...
As one can see, "Luxen" (my PC-name), is there and active, but OFFLINE...
It should be "\\LUXEN\music"...but the HDX still gives the red dot...
Where would be the "downloads"-folder I can nicely see on my Windows10??
I guess all these other "NASSERVER" and stuff are from the previous owner?
Just ripped a CD to WAV...all perfect...
If I could only put my music into downloads...
YEAH!!!!
I added a new share with:
\\NSHDX851E\Downloads
Awesome.
Thanks
"Downloads" should have been on the HDX's internal hard drive already!
Can you take a screenshot of the root directory of the HDX's drive, when you browse to it using Windows?
You should see two directories - Music and Downloads.
All good...it is there now in the "scannable network shares"...
This I added in the "scannable network blablabla":
\\NSHDX851E\Downloads
It was not there...
You might get Naim tech support (Phil Harris here) to log into your HDX and take a look. I'm pretty sure that when the operating system is installed on the HDX, the Downloads folder is automatically created. Something may be amiss; if it were me I'd schedule a time where Naim can log into it and have a look just to be sure you've got it sorted.
(This IS the 2 tb internal hard drive version? Running server version 1.7b?)
All is fine now...copying right now my ACDC albums onto the 2TB...
