Delete files on the HDX

Posted by: Thorsten_L on 22 August 2015

I have to say that the HDX is a most wonderful music machine.

Sometimes I still need to ask some questions...

If I delete an album or several in the "downloads" folder of the HDX via Windows, all works perfectly.

I just wanted to know if these files are REALLY wiped, since they don't appear in my recycle bin in Windows...

If I delete files via the DTC in the "music" folder, they appear in the DTC recycle bin and I can then empty the bin.

Thank you for your patience

The HDX is fundamentally a PC running embedded Windows XP, and the DTC is just a way to see and control what is going on in there.  That is why you see deleted files in the HDX recycle bin, which you can see into via the DTC, and not in your PC's recycle bin. Those deleted files never come near your PC.

Of course emptying the recycle bin doesn't actually delete the file, it just removes it from the list of available files and makes the disc space available for use by another file, which might happen immediately or not for months, depending on what you do with the HDX. But that's another story......

i hope this helps

Thank you.

I was actually referring to the files in the "downloads" folder...the files I delete in the (ripped) "music" folder are emptied out of the HDX´s recycle bin. I was just wondering why not the files from the "downloads" folder where I put "my" music in.

Hmm. Not sure about that, but perhaps it's something to do with the folder settings (ie that deletions from the downloads folder don't go to the recycle bin).  That's probably buried in firmware somewhere in the HDX and not accessible from outside. Why Naim should choose to do it differently between the two folders is anyone's guess, but the addition of the downloads folder was something that came with the 2TB disc upgrade and it may just be as simple as the person writing the code just did it differently.  Or maybe if Phil reads this, he will tell us what the reason was......
