Lp12- mm or mc....and riaa

Posted by: Stover on 24 August 2015

lp12, Roksan Nima with Linn Adikt. That was the decks content when I picked it up this weekend. Three years of age, Adikt not used very much so I guess it's more to get from it.

Any obvious choices here. I want to keep cost down if possible, at least until I have got to know it and was thinking of an mm Graham slee Amp 2 SE. Any reasons why I should sell Adikt and go the mc way or other obvious riaa instead of the GS?

Thanks in advance.

I just went to the roksan nima and chose a dynavektor 20x2l ino a prefix s. Absolutely awesome. I had the adikt on an akito before, they were happy together. To me the Nima deserves a good cartridge.

I haven't landed phono yet, but have found I should go for a mm/mc stage.

1. Lehmann se and Rega Aria are quite similar priced and both available. What can I expect from them soundwise?

2. By using a combined stage, I could try mc carts as well and I read Dynavektors are good.

Could anyone share some words about the caracter of the mm Adikt or an mc Dynavektor cart?

3. Third and last question, the balance of the deck. Currently Circus, Valhalla, Nima, I have found the Valhalla would be the obvious place to upgrade on the deck itself. With a Lingo it would become a more balanced deck and not require further upgrades (for a while)

If I should be responsible, closing topics that I`ve started  Without any audition of any kind, between a Lehmann Black Cube (se) or Rega Aria, I got my hands on a s/h Aria. That choice was based on input from you, reading and research.

This will be a long term process and who know`s where this will end. I look forward to receive the amp, set it all up, buy some albums and listen to some music.

Thanks again, S

2. I went from DV10x5 to DV20x2L. Absolutely no regrets. More than worth the price difference. Power, detail and finesse.

3. It is unclear to me which is the best way to go next if you have a Valhalla/ Cirkus Linn. I have a thought that I may have seen a You Tube film where  David Williamson advocates Kore first. Could just be some sort of false memory. You could check it. Or get a dealer dem and make a decision. You'll probably end up doing both anyway  :-)

If you can’t afford/don’t want to afford the Lingo the Hercules/Mose combination either pre-assembled or as a kit is easily available on eBay. It gives you 2 speed operation and a lot of what the Lingo gives.. Having used it I would say it is 85-90% of what a Lingo is at 1/4 the price.

Thanks, it seems there`s a Hercules motor drive mounted. This is based on the 2 speed button and by the mail correspondence between the UK dealer and the first owner. I`m not at home, but will check that.

The local dealer (550km distance by car) said a Lingo should be my first upgrade, but that was based on me saying it has a Valhalla (which is not correct then).

I have hardly unpacked the deck yet, that`s why I cannot confirm on all this.

I really look forward to make it sing now.

If you have a Hercules mounted within the plinth then there's a rather nice (and relatively inexpensive) upgrade you can do; You purchase the Mose off board PSU kit and fit the Hercules board inside.

Thanks Richard/ DUPREE. I will check out Mose.

The hercules is good but not that good. I replaced the burnt out board in my manticore MB6 PSU with a hercules, The resulting  PSU is not exactly the same as the mose, but should be superior, it has a transformer to isolate the mains whereas the mose PSU only has a mains filter.

The mose is detailed enough and I’m quite happy with it but it’s nowhere near as dynamic, although to be fair the MB6 is better than a lingo.

I’d recommend checking the decks set up properly before considering upgrades.
