How to play .dff files?
Posted by: Silence Kills on 26 August 2015
I downloaded a .dff file from
http://www.hifistatement.net/d...sd-und-hires?start=1
and tried to play it via UPnP on my Naim Streamer. But it doesn't work. It tries to connect but seems to get an error and initialises input afterwards. I am using Minim as a server.
Anyone got a .dff file to work?
.dsf files are working for me. Got some from
Ok, got it.
Make sure you have the Minim Streamer component installed.
Insert (or add) under the "System" tab into "stream.transcode" the value "dff:dopwav".
Now it works for me. The Naim streamer displays "DSD64 2.8MHz" during playback.
Yep, I had to do the same to get things working...
If you have to transcode the DFF file in order for the streamer to recognise it, then in what sense is the streamer streaming DSD?
The DOP in DOPWAV must be DSD over PCM which is a standard to encoding DSD into PCM frames. So, it's still DSD. On Asset however, I don't need to do this, but perhaps this is how it gets encoded 'under the covers'.
Ah ha, thanks.
I'm using Asset uPnP with an ND5XS (just updated it to v4.3) and when I try to stream a raw DFF file the app blanks and just shows the rotating/loading icon and the front of the unit just says 'Connecting' and seems to freeze. If I set Asset to transcode DFF to DoP, then the ND5XS will 'play' the track but it just produces a low level 'white' noise with the music very very quiet in the background. This same thing happens (white noise) if I put the files on a USB and plug it in the front.
Any idea what could be going on here?
Can you confirm the latest version of Asset (or MinimServer) you are using. The latest versions of both don't require any transcoding of DSD files to play out on Naim, at least for me they don't.

I'm using Asset version 5.1 on XP. I normally use Asset on my Raspberry Pi, but apparently that isn't compatible with DSD, which is why I've just put it on the computer, just to experiment with DSD.
The white noise I was experiencing, I have discovered, happens when I am running through my Naim DAC, which I assume is because the DAC can't do DSD? Rather frustrating! It works fine if I use the analogue output of the ND5XS and bypass the DAC (this is still while transcoding to DoP).

I am just curious how to download file from the first link. When I click on the “download" word nothing is happening?
I have just re checked, I use a Pi as well with Asset 4.5 and that does not use DSD as ypu say, however I usually use MinimServer on the Pi as well now (I tun both but Minim is quicker, but Asset has better auto playlists) and that does. Fairly sure Minimserver sends DSD as DoP so you don't need to anything with MinimServer I will check later in the config.
Reading the blurb on Asset 5 it sends DSD as untouched or encapsulated as DoP. ... I will have a look later as I have V5 on the PC for experimenting to see what I did when I experimented here
The NDAC doesn't support DSD, and so noise will play out. If the noise has faint audio and is clocked, then it would suggest to me the DSD is encoded in DoP frames.. In which case the ND5XS should decode.. So feels strange..
in Asset Advanced Configuration, what have you set DFF and DSF files as, As is or DoP embedded?

Just checked my version of MinimServer, I don't need to put DSF or DFF settings in at all to stream to Naim.
