transcoding on the fly - scrubbing?
Posted by: Andy Barratt on 28 August 2015
I noticed that when I'm transcoding on the fly to my UQ2, from an Asset uPnP server, switching flac or alac to WAV - i can't scrub the files, i.e., can't wind a song in a bit. Is that a limitation of transcoding?
Hi Andy -
I have not experienced this while transcoding FLAC to WAV24 using MinimServer on a Synology 213+. Could it be a processor speed limitation on your NAS?

wouldn't have thought so - i'm running it on my relatively fast mac.
That is strange I can certainly cue fast forward and rewind with Asset running on my RasberryPi transcoding from FLAC to wav with the Naim app. I don't think this function is particularly processor hungry.. It's more about interoperability between controller and media server.

I wonder if it's the difference between v5 and v4.5?
Possibly, I am using V4.5 on the Pi

Why do you transcode 16 bit data to 24 bit? IMO this only gives false sense of air to the recordings.
You should only do Flac to Wav. You can also do mp3 to wav. This option preserves recordings original bit depth.

I set it up both ways to test, left it on 24 as that was the last time I fooled with it...not a huge difference but yeah a slightly more open sound. Not sure I agree that any sense of air would be "false", although I guess I do know what you mean about any and all filtering (including zero padding from 16 to 24 bits) being a "filter" effect rather than a "bare metal" reality. I use the loudness control on my Qute too...heresy or preference? My view is that these things are in their to give choices, not as impositions.
