CD5 ERROR

Posted by: Robd67 on 01 September 2015

My CD5 which is about 14years old, I've had it for 12 years ex dem, has developed a fault. I recently packed my system away due house repairs for 2 months. Since setting back up my CD5 won't play discs, it shows 'ERR' on display. I did get one disc to play "The Mission" soundtrack but the drive sounded noisy! guessed slipping under puck. I have just replaced the puck and cleaned the spindle with blutack as per instructions. But still not playing and said disc is not playing either. It is connected to Flatcap2, the only difference since re setting up is I swapped the Snaic leads round with my Nait XS2. Has this happened to anyone else, I will send it off for repair. Just curious as to what the fault is. Discs do seem to spin, as when the drawer is opened you see them stop. So I guess a laser problem?

If you have replaced the clamp and you still get ERR then it looks most likely to be a laser/mech failure.

Thanks Richard. I thought as much, arranging with my local dealer to send of for repair.

Ironic since I got an ND5XS I haven't really used the CD player, but now I've set my system back up I miss playing discs!

The mech may be OK, but it's possible that one or both of the driver chips that control the sled / motor / focus may be faulty - in either case, it's off to the authorized repair center.

Hi,

my CDS2 started skipping after 10 years. It went back to HQ for a service and was fine. The cost of replacing the mechanism wasn't that expensive.

Hi the latest is my dealer has contacted Naim, unfortunately the Laser is not available anymore. They can refurb but this is not guaranteed for long term. Some people are lucky others not so with this fix apparently.

So question is do I risk repair or go for an ex dem CD5si offered by dealer? Has anyone compared a CD5/Flatcap2 with the newer CD5si? CD is now secondary source as I use ND5XS as main.

I much preferred the cd5i to the original cd5, it's a little more forward and exciting sounding, more bouncy and fun, the original was a little to tame for my taste. The cd5si would seem to be more similar sounding to the cd5i than the original cd5, if that's the case then yes I would probably opt for the newer player, not to mention the fact that a 14 year old player may have some other issues that you may not be aware of.
