Getting the best sound quality out of Muso
Posted by: Arif Khan on 05 September 2015
Hello Everyone,
Having come across this forum and reading lots of posts over the last couple of weeks I have learnt a fair bit.
I have decide to purchase a Muso because I feel at this point it suits my situation nicely.
I visited John Lewis plugged my iPhone via generic jack to jack lead and had a real good listen to the Muso at all volume levels for nearly an hour (The staff did not look impressed but they did let me carry on having fun)
I must say that the Muso impressed me and feel it will sound even nicer once home and set up with decent interconnects. The only way I can describe the sound was that it was smooth. bass seemed to be lacking a little and once past number nine on the volume the bass started to loose control on some tunes, but I can live with that because it was quite loud enough.
I have know idea how it was set up with regards to loudness and room correction.
All of my music being ripped from CDs (AIFF 16/44) is stored on my late Mac mini and I will also be using my iPhone 6 plus.
What I would be grateful to know is how to connect my Mac mini and iPhone to the Muso for the best sound quality.
I believe my options are,
1- Jack to Jack Mac / iphone
2- Optical via the 3.5mm headphone jack on my Mac
3- USB to iphone
4- Airplay Mac and iphone
I do appreciate any advice and would love to hear your thoughts.

Airplay will work but easier still is install a suitable server on the mini (Plex works great with naim)
Point it at you music, it will scan them in.
Then download the naim app from the app store, boom, music sorted.

Thanks for the quick response garyi, Maybe I should let you know you that I am using iTunes on my mac.
Do you think Airplay will give me better SQ than options 1,2 and 3 ?, Or is Plex better still
Thanks again

Plex does not care about itunes, just point it to itunes music folder
As for sound quality, well the muso is a lifestyle device, i should pick the easiest way to play your media and chill, by no stretch would the muso be considered audiophile.

garyi I never said it was audiophile I just wanted to know out of the options I gave what inputs to use for best SQ.
So I know if its worth spending a little money on half decent jack to jack, optical leads etc.
Thanks

Just wanted to add that I wish I could afford true audiophile gear but the fact is I cannot.
Hence the reason I would like to get the best out of my Muso until the day comes when I can afford to buy myself some real Naim gear.

Well for sq you are simply getting into the age old audiophile mind set, people here genuinely think the ethernet cable from the nas to the router improves sound quality. I would argue if you have anrobust network, upnp is the way to go as there are no wires, however there will be plenty who will argue that point.

Okay thanks for the info garyi.

My router is in a different room from where my Mac mini and muso will be, so I will be using wifi,
can I not wire my mac directly into the muso and will it sound better than using airplay?
Thanks

No you cannot wire the two together. If they are next to each other then i would plug an optical cable between the two, you can then use apples remote app to control from the sofa!

Hi Arif,
If your Mini has an optical out then you have the option to use a toslink cable directly into the Muso. Note that in this set-up you would be using the Mini as the player (ie iTunes) and you would lose the ability to control everything with the Naim app, if that matters. I would expect sound quality to be pretty good, especially if you get a s/ware player such as eg Audirvana as an upgrade to iTunes.
I think every option available to you can be trialled/tested for no extra expense, so it makes sense to play around and get a feel for what works best.

Thank You karlos,
Very helpful advice and yes I probably will go the toslink route, I also agree there are a few set up options to go with and it will be will be fun trying out the different options
As garyi says this is not an audiophile system but I feel there is no harm trying to get the best out of it (Within reason of course)
A while back I did have decent hifi that sounded very clean but got well into sports bikes and mountain bikes and have left them alone now only to rediscover my love for music and music quality.
Space is also a concern right now this is why I will soon be purchasing the muso
Thanks again karlos you have been most helpful and have confirmed what I was hoping to hear.

Hi Arif, I have a Muso in my office (which is quite a big room with high ceilings) and the Muso does a great job of filling it with great sounding music. I've played around with the different inputs and file types and whilst 24bit 192 files sound great I have drop out issues from my Nas which is located in the living room next to my main system. Therefore iTunes / spotify often end up being played over wifi and it still sounds great.
ive had many 1 box solutions over the years and I think the Muso is not only the best sounding (by far) but also the most versatile for inputs and file resolutions. Not to mention it's great looks.
im sure you'll enjoy it very much.

The option to get the best sound is to install a NAS put the music on the NAS get good interconnect for NAS to Router and Router to Muso and you will have a great sound ......

Why can't you wire them together? Ethernet cable from each device into a £20 switch should work, with the mini (with appripriate software) functioning as a NAS.

You don't need a separate NAS, just install uPnP software (I prefer Asset uPnP but I do use PLEX for movie streaming) on the Mini, then either connect up via Ethernet or wirelessly. If you've a late-model Mini it won't have an optical out connection IIRC, so to go that route you'd need a USB to SPDIF convertor.

Hi Guys,
Wow some very interesting and varied comments, and it seems many different configuration options.
Harty its good to know that you are enjoying your muso with iTunes over wifi, as my music files are on my mini and only aiff 16/44 CD rips I want to keep things simple and go along this path.
I am very new to computers and this digital way of listening to music so think it is wise to keep it simple for now.
And yes I think I will be enjoying the Muso lots
Bert as my router is to be in another room from the Muso hardwiring is not an option but I'm hoping there should be no problem with wifi and my CD rips (I hope to get CD SQ over wifi / airplay)
tonym thanks for your suggestions, I purchased my mini at the beginning of the year and am fairly sure that the headphone jack doubles as an optical out If I am wrong please correct me.
So can any of you Naim nuts confirm if I can use optical or jack lead from mini to Muso for best SQ or should I just stick with airplay and wifi.
Thanks guys its been very informative and would love to hear further thoughts about the muso.

Why?
The two cannot be wired together with a wire, you have confirmed that, but why clog up boths ethernet just so they can see each other, plus you'll need routing, although technically possible it serves no purpose.
